GMU 64-65 Cow Tag

So just got back to Colorado and of course missed the drawing times so was at my Local Wal Mart for the Crashing experience this year to try and get a left over tag. That was a nightmare but I at least got a Cow tag for first rifle season unit 65. Fill the Freezer is what the wife told me. I hunted 66 several years ago archery and came out with a very nice bull. Of course there are no left overs for that area.
So went with this since it was close to that area and I think its one of the most beautiful areas in Colorado. I have now purchased every map I can get my hand on for this area and looking over some nice areas.

Just wanted to hear from anyone that might of hunted this area in season 1 that might have any tips for me. I am hunting alone so if anyone else is in this same situation and wants to camp together let me know. I am planning on getting up there on the 5th of October and scouting for a few days before the season kicks off. I have heard that silverjack may be over run with hunters but I am planning on setting up base camp there I think and scouting for a few days to see if I can find elk before committing to anything. I know its steep rough terrain and I am ok with that. A year of hiking cliff faces and waddies in Afghanistan has prepared me for the lung torture I am about to endure I am sure.

Any advice greatly appreciated and hoping to have a great hunt this year. For me greatness is not measured in the size of antlers I bring home which in this case will be zero but in the amount of beautiful country I get to see and experience.

I killed a nice bull in that unit and have a close friend that hunts it every year almost. This year they are not so after you have three post you can PM me and I will give you some detailed info if you desire. The area I am familiar with is around Courthouse Rock. Help ya if I can.

You picked a good area to hunt... the best advice I can give you is if it's warm and no snow hunt up high but if there is snow hunt lower elevations. Just about any area in those units has elk but as the hunting pressure builds the elk head for private land. A good tactic for first rifle season is to setup on travel areas near private land and catch them on their way to hide from the pressure.

I hunt 65 every year. I will be out there Sept. 13 till the end of bow season! I will try to help out as much as I can
