Base camp or pack in? Not that the basics change a whole lot for me. No matter where you are camped you'll be wore out at the end of the day. Phantom and I agree that the idea is to not only have something quick but also with minimal cleanup. No pots and pans or dishes. For that reason Mountain House dehydrated meals fits the bill. The serving for 2 are perfect for one hungry elk hunter. I also like their Neapolitan ice cream for dessert. Elk jerky is also a must for me. For days peanut butter and jelly too. Granola bars and or trail mix. Jolly Ranchers for dry mouth especially when going uphill conserves water. Fruit is nice is you want to pack it. I might also bring a variety bag of those small sized bags of chips.

3-4 day bivy hunt. Smoked salmon or jerkey elk, mountian house w/o stove ( just add water a few hours before meal and let soak), homemade backcountry bars (breakfast), almonds and craisins, mix to add to water for flavor. The goal is to carry as much of the pack weight in food as possible so pack gets 2 lbs. Lighter each day. This is hunting with the pack on so you want it as light as possible. A grouse or two helps extend the trip.

In the past, if I'm backpacking in: MH, dried fruit/meat, granola bars, oatmeal.
At my base camp, easy stuff like canned/boxed food. But mostly meals that my lovely wife has prepared for me (vacuum sealed and frozen). Doesn't get much easier than dropping a frozen meal in a boiling pot of water.

And as mentioned in another thread, this year I am going to try to dehydrate all my meals. Looks like a lot of others are doing it with success so I'm going to give it a shot too.

Matt forgets to tell you, that if I'm packing my jetboil, he will take hot water with his Mountain House :D
