Another mouth call Question

Postby ranjo » 08 08, 2014 •  [Post 1]

I prefer mouth calls while turkey hunting and can call great with one once i found the right call for me. My favorite turkey calls are 1 3/8" wide, my elk calls are 1 7/8" wide, I've tried cutting calls down and that don't seem to work, Are there any calls out there that are smaller or any advice on working with what I have(Primos). Once I found the turkey calls that worked for me I could really manipulate my sounds, really made it easy for me. I'm struggling with this, just looking for advise. Randy

Hey Randy, let talk reed stretch first turkey calls use the same latex as elk calls but they are stretched differently. Generally turkey call are not as tightly stretched so the intricate sounds needed can be done. Also you don't need the really high notes or volume. Most turkey calls will make excellent cow calls but aren't great for bugling. The opposite is true of an elk call for bugling, the tight stretch allows for high notes and louder calling.
As far as size goes I have to ask are you talking frame or tape? If it is frame one of the companies that makes a smaller frame size is Glen Berry[Rory can add to this as this is his go to call]. Glen has made a good selection of elk calls for years and may have exactly what you are looking for. If you are talking tape size you will find that on a lot of elk calls the tape size can be bigger and this would be for better seal to allow for the added air flow to get the volume and not spit out the call. The tape can be trimmed a little to make the call fit but if you choose to do this cut very little at a time or you could loose the seal to the roof of your mouth and the call will be useless.
If it is the cutter style call you are looking for HS may still make a 2.5 in an elk call. WRO is working on that style of call right now, talk to Travis O'Shea.

Randy,
Give the Mini-Master by Bugling Bulls a shot. It's available from ElkNut's store. That call is slightly smaller than most of the others. I'm the same way, once I find a call that works right, I'm good to go. Tried several brands and found that I don't like the way the metal palate plate feels and prefer the most of the plastic dome top calls.

First of all, Thank you. As far as size goes I'm talking frame and tape, I believe my call now is a Primos, its so wide it wrinkles up when I seat it in my mouth and from my experience when I trim the tape back it puts the reed to close to the roof of my mouth because of its size.

Hi Randy,

We have a small frame reed style that will fit your needs as well. They are called our junior series and the frame is much smaller. You can order any of our reeds in that size all you do is go on our site wapitiriveroutdoors.com and in the comments section add some text that you would like the small frame. You can also call me and order direct on the phone and chat elk hunting !!

Hope that helps.
