How many game bags?

Postby WYO_ELK » 08 03, 2014 •  [Post 1]

How many game bags does it take for you guys to get an elk out? Also, do you just carry one or two with you and just grab more when you make the first pack out to the truck? Also what brand and size do you recommend? Thanks guys, greenhorn here just trying to get the right equipment

I use Allen quarter bags, they are lightweight, and I carry all 4 in my pack.

I have two sets, one does quarters[carry 4] and one does halves[carry 2]. I still bring out half an elk at a time on my sled.

Ok, so one for each quarter and another one for loins, rib meat, neck meat and anything else I want to bring out?

T.A.G. Bags from pristine ventures. Nothing like em. Virtually indestructible and can be used yr. after yr..

Comes with 5 bags although I usually only use 4. Two for a back ham each and two with a shoulder and tenderloin each!

The 4 biggest cotton pillow cases I could find @ Goodwill. See pics in Meatpole thread here, post # 122. Works great, costs little.

I make my own out of small painters drop cloth for about $5.00 each. Just fold them in 1/2, seam 1 end and 1 side, sew a shoe lace near the top to use as a tie string. We usually use between 4 and 5 depending on the size of elk and how much weight we want to carry. We bone everything out and only put about 70 to 90 pounds in each bag. The bags can handle a lot more, but we can't. We are all in our 60's now and can't handle much more than that. Hate getting old!
I have about 20 in my gear box and usually give a few to friends every season..
The chili powder keeps flies and meat bees off while working on all big game. I posted this last year about this time and got good feedback from other hunters including Elknut.

This 6x6 bull was my 25th archery elk. We used 5 bags and 2 small bottles of chili powder. The heaviest bag was around 80 lbs.

I use 4 elk bags! Two for both hindquarters then the other two are saved for a boned out front shoulder, tenderloin, backstrap & 1/2 the loose meat in one & the same in the 4th bag, we've not ever needed any more than that! Yep, 4 bags will do it!

Crazyelkhunter is right on about that chili pepper! I'm a firm believer in it after he shared that tip with us last year, it worked great, we have it in our packs now! Thanks!
