Hiked in for the last weekend of A/zone bow hunt. It was so hot. So hot you would shiver from the heat wave. Sitting in the sun the hot wind would blow thru and suck up any perceived coolness. It was not fun. Then we found a pond! It was
Surrounded by grey squirrels. We zinged judos at them. So had to hit. They would duck our arrows. Checking out the pond I saw elk tracks! Then I see piles of elk poop! Wow ! We waited for the sun to go down.we had sat on water for six hours. No deer, no hogs. Lots of educated squirrels and one smarter bullfrog. Hiking out I see brown bodies. Cows! Elk cows! We move on and crest a hill and see him. It was a 7x6 bull elk. A tule elk. He had a bunch of cows with him and two spikes.

It was amazing to see elk on public land. Not sure if they are protected here or not.

Driving out we saw a 5x5.

We do have elk tags in that location, but they are very limited. I apply every year for a tule tag, even though we have some huge rocky mountain elk in the northeast corner of the state. California is the only place that has tule elk, which is kind of weird, since we have the worst game management plan in all of the U.S., our fish and wildlife commissioner is a political appointee. We do have a thriving population of three different species of elk, even with poor management practices.

Wow, awesome! I went to college in nor cal and it's weird to think that there were elk that close by. I've heard there are some monster bulls up in Modoc county. Unfortunately you have a better chance at winning the powerball than drawing a tag. I think that could change someday with the right management, but that probably won't be any time soon.
