GPS system for solo Hunter

Postby Toby » 07 14, 2014 •  [Post 1]

I can't think of the name of what I am looking for, but it is the system that allows others to track your whereabouts.

I think some versions of the SPOT will do that as well.

Bought a Garmin eTrex 20 and loaded the Colorado HuntX maps, it worked awesome this past weekend.

For others tracking you is not a standard GPS. Thinking of SPOT and/or Inreach? There may be others.

The Rino Paul posted allows you to send your coordinates to someone else, but don't think it is primarily a rescue locator...

I've had both the SPOT and inreach. I think the inreach is a lot better. I think they use the same satellite, but for some reason my inreach had more consistent connections. And the 2-way communication is a big plus.

The delorme inreach will let others ping you and track where you are. Not sure if SPOT has that feature too. I am leaning towards the inreach because of the subscription options. You don't have to do an annual subscription. They have different packages based on what you need.

If anyone is interested in the original inreach (for pairing with an Android phone), I have one I am going to putting up for sale (I'm upgrading to the SE).

You're thinking of the Garmin Rhino series I believe. You can punch in coordinates and sync with your partner so that you can track each other, share waypoints etc and I believe you might be able to text on the more expensive model. Heard nothing but good things about it. Slim9300 and his crew uses them if I'm not mistaken.
