25 vs 45

Postby ringneckdog » 06 26, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Im looking at doing my first elk hunt. Currently I'm planning on doing a DIY archery hunt with a couple buddies. I'm trying to narrow down between units 25 and 45 in Colorado or if you have any other units you would maybe suggest.

I'm trying to find a place that possibly isn't a heavily traveled by hunters as others. Anticipating hiking in a couple miles and Bivy Hunting.

It's been a little overwhelming going back and forth looking at multiple years of data of hunter numbers vs harvest vs elk population and extensive use of google earth.

I'm trying to narrow it down between either starting by the sweetwater lake area and heading in there in unit 25 or going to unit 45 and starting by the homelake reservoir area.

Either area I understand is going to be drastically different that the much smaller bluffs I hunt here in Wisconsin.

I not as concerned about finding a trophy of a lifetime. I'm more so looking to start gaining experience and will start putting in for points and draws in other areas this coming year.

Any and all feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks
Matt

55! We're picking the best age for elk hunting in this thread, right?

I looking for the best amount of elk vs the amount of hunters. Just not sure where the best starting point would be to gain some experience. Any and all feedback anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
