Are You Struggling With Mouth Reeds?

Here's a heads up as elk season gets closer! Some can pick up the use of mouth reeds rather easily while others struggle to the point of frustration! If you are one that struggles with the use of them you may want to do what this individual did to overcome his frustrations! Here's a note I just received & wanted to share it here!

I personally have no problem with mouth reeds. It's the damn elk that run from them when I call! (grin)

I won't say that I have a problem with mouth reeds, but some work better for me than others. If a person doesn't know or is having a problem, now is the time to find out. You need to know how to make one work for you. If you still can't get one to work well, try another brand. If after you have tried a few and you are still struggling you are either doing wrong, or you need to find a good bite and blow type. Diaphragms are the most versatile, but if you can't get them to make the sounds you want, then go to a bite and blow. They can work well for you and get the job done.

I have no problem when I practice, but in the heat of the moment I get dry mouth and nothing happens.

I have difficulty with a lip bawl and estrus buzz so I don't even attempt them in the elkwoods. I have decent control with select sounds so I stick with those sounds.

I can generally get my reeds to work ok after months of no practice but my calling sharpens up after some practice. With some practice i tend to be much more confident that the sound that i want will actually come out when i want it to. I have noticed that some reeds don't work so great fresh out of the package and need some breakin, so don't give up on a call too soon. Other calls work just great from brand new. When learning to operate a mouth reed somtimes just a small change in location and pressure in the mouth can make a huge difference so much experimentation is in order. If you get the chance to ask questions of an exceptional caller, ask them to explain exactly what they are doing to get a particular sound. Different callers somtimes have quite different techniques to achieve a specific sound. I had used turkey reeds since childhood but struggled for years with producing simple cow sounds until i saw a video of a call maker explaining proper reed location. I popped in a reed and immediatly made it work so keep trying and you will eventually "get it".
