OTC Suggestions

It's looking like 2014 might work out for me. If I do go I'll be going by myself which is fine, just makes the fuel cost a little more expensive. Probably look at Colorado since it's the closest state and cheapest tag. I'm a bowhunter and all I really want to do is just find a bull that will bugle and talk to me, what unit gives me my best chance at finding the most vocal bulls and what time in September?

I think you are going to have a hard time finding anyone willing to offer up exceptional OTC units on a public forum. If you get on the Colorado division of wildlife website, you can find harvest statistics for each unit. In my experience the OTC units with lots of public land are about the same. The ones with unusually high success rates have lots of private land. Pick a unit you can get into, use Google earth and maps to find the elky looking stuff, then walk around using your eyes and ears until you find em. Try to avoid other people and sheep. You should at least be hearing some bugles at night. Other than that, there ain't nothing easy about it. Luck to ya.

Agreed. Take the statistics on the DOW/CPW website with a grain of salt. Close your eyes and point your finger to a spot in the Colorado mountains and elk are guaranteed to be somewhere in the vicinity during hunting season. Pick a unit, then pick a general area, then figure out where you think they'll be come season. Best advice I can offer is to hunt the same spot at least 3 years in a row. There are "mediocre" areas that can be very productive if you know the country very well and have spent time afield figuring out patterns.

You gotta sometime's read more out of the forum boys than what's written in English. A guy or several guy's actually gave a good tip just recently on Unit 43 near Capital Peak. If I was lookin for a spot in CO it wouldn't b real hard to find one to at least investigate.

If someone argues it too hard away it always peaks my interest and I begin the research . Just me.
