Oregons newest elk hunter

The family and I have moved to a state that has OTC elk tags! Although this is very exciting it also comes with all the fun work of scouting. I've already been in the woods and pouring over topo maps daily. My target area will be the Umpqua National Forest and adjacent BLM land South of the North Umpqua River. Do any of you have experience or an opinion on the area described? I've been hunting wilderness the last few years and now I'll be surrounded by roads which has its benefits. I look forward to hearing some feedback and the work that lies before me.

I was raised up Little River and worked for the Forest Service out of Glide and Diamond Lake. I still go up Little River every year. The deer and elk hunting in the area has fallen off in the last 20 years due to the lack of timber harvest and ineffective predator control. I have not hunted the area in several years, but I would stay close to private land and pay attention to where there are sizable quantities of forage. Forage is in short supply on the National Forest. Some of the big burns where there is forage get hunted pretty hard. I would scout up Cavitt Creek. Are you hunting with a bow or rifle.

I also worked out of Glide and Diamond Lake with the Forest Service. When I get some time next weekend I will pm you a spot or two that will be worth checking out. I would also look at some fire maps for areas that have burned in the last 10 or so years. Good luck!
