Why did you choose the state you did to hunt Elk

Postby Triplebhunters » 04 17, 2014 •  [Post 1]

For me, in 2007 I started looking at Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana. I chose Colorado, as it had lots of Elk, and had jobs in my career field. This will be my fourth year in Colorado. My original goal was to buy points and alternate years hunting Wy and Co. Have not had the time to set aside to learn as much as I would like about Wyoming. It's unreal how much time is vested in training to travel west to hunt the almighty Elk. Though I will be buying a point this year.

We didn't like the 18 hour drive to Colorado so we switch to Idaho for the 21 hour drive. It's the only rest we get in this elk hunting sport. Or we had to many hunter in our spot and needed a change.

I have spent enough time in a few states to be able to get to know some elky areas that I'd love to hunt in earnest if I got the chance to get back to those spots. Washington is my homestate. I grew up living near, playing, and eventually working in many of the forestlands here. I got a little bit of a head start on my bro, but we basically began bowhunting together. So, it made sense to mostly hunt WA.

Montana.....Closest state to hunt elk and I can get a tag every year. I guess I am the most familiar with it as well.

Bigger bulls, less people. More elk per hunter means they get to grow older and always a chance at a real giant.

Tag availability and distance. I would hunt every state I could draw if I had the time.

It's my home state and I'm pretty sure I couldn't have better hunting in another state with an OTC tag than I get here. :D

NM, because I haven't won the lotto yet and can't afford out of state tags.

I chose Colorado due to being able to purchase a non-resident either sex elk tag over the counter in the unit I hunt in. I started hunting there seven years ago. Due to the beetle kill in the area I hunt I am going to Montana this year to get familiar with another state to hunt elk in. A friend ask me to go with him this year. Looking forward to the change and different scenery. Good luck to all. Mike
