Calling and Hearing

After reading all the threads about certain scenarios and calling setups, I can't help but wonder what it would be like to be able to be in these scenarios and real life situations AND be able to hear the elk calls. I am at a huge disadvantage when it comes to calling. I am usually the 'tag along' hunter and always have a partner with me. I can imagine how hard it would be for me to solo hunt and expect to find elk without really hearing the elk chatter and being able to respond to their calling. Wandering aimlessly in the mountains would be more like it if I was to hunt solo. A deaf guy wandering around and have a bull screaming behind me and not have a clue he is there would sound pretty comical but in reality it's bound to happen sooner or later. I am forever in debt and grateful for the guys that I hunt with because without them, I would be lost in the hearing hunting world.

As hard as elk hunting is, being deaf and elk hunting is twice as much challenging for me but I am not quitting until I put that 6x6 on the ground one of these years. I wouldn't actually quit per se but I will say I beat the challenge head on.

Thanks guys for coming up with the thread on calling. It keeps my imagination fresh even if I cannot hear them play out in real life It's a pretty special feeling...

I do sit in a stand for whitetails but never have for elk yet. We are considering bringing out some stands this season. Hard to gauge where to set one up since we live over 1800 miles from the elk ground and it's hard to do some early season scouting. We do have some wallows marked on the GPS from last season so hopefully they will be used again this year.

Been deaf since 2 years old, I am almost 42 now. No real answer as how it happened. It may have been a combination of very high fevers and many ear infections when I was just a real little man. As for the Irish part, my great grandfather was from Ireland

I admire you for the grit it takes to chase elk without being able to hear them. You have some great hunting partners. I am sure you enjoy all the other things about elk hunting that we all do. Stick with. It, you will get that 6x6 someday.

Yes sir, I'm with Toby, your admiration is very inspiring as is Mtnmutt, both of you have a severe handicap but it doesn't stop you folks doing what you hold dear to your heart, that is awesome! Hunting from a treestand can be very effective I'd definitely give it serious consideration my friend! Feel free to ask any questions on their use or location of putting them as there are a few here that hunt elk this way. Go getem!

Thanks Toby. I appreciate that very much. I am quite sure it's a whole different ball game when you can hear them One of these years I will put a 6x6 on the ground. I love everything there is about elk hunting. Putting one on the ground is a bonus for me.

I did manage to hear one bugle last fall by cupping my hands around my hearing aids and I heard him very faintly. The guys I was with told me he was very close and very loud. That explains about how well I can hear !! Lol

Thank you Paul. I appreciate it your comments very much. I will definitely post a thread on tree stand hunting. I think I may have seen a thread on this topic before but can't remember when..I am all game for coming up with ways to improve my chances of putting one on the ground. I will most definitely be trying out stand hunting a few days this season. I don't have the advantage of scouting for areas before the season starts to hang a stand, that's my only downfall but I won't let that stop me

You will catch up soon in age As for growing up deaf, you wouldn't believe the teasing and taunting I went through growing up. It wasn't so funny back then but I can look at it now and see a lot of humor in it I feel for the kids nowadays that have to go through the same things I did...

At least I don't have to worry about what's lurking behind me in the dark cuz I wouldn't be able to hear those critters. One advantage I have
