"X" Marks the Spot #2

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 01 29, 2014 •  [Post 1]

OK, welcome to Washington. Glad you could join me on a Roosevelt Elk hunt this year! The area I take you to is a 3 point or better area (one branch must have at least 3 points). This guy fits the bill. One the fourth day of our hunt, we set up for a cold calling session. I've set you up pretty much at the angle you see this picture (he's straight on from you). I'm back of you, to your left, and this pretty little Roosey just came trotting into this opening, stopped, and locked on to where he thought the sounds were coming from (me) downwind. You drew back when you first saw him moving towards us. He stopped at about 25 yards from you, 45 from me, and won't be there long for certain.

Mark your X and repost the pic if you're gonna touch the release trigger on this one. Or, say "no shot" and explain your decision.

I'm not taking a shot from that angle, hoping he'll turn away before completely busting out of there.

Quartering towards shot, sorry but I would wait for a better shot.

I would pass. I may not get another chance on this guy, but I am not spending hours or days looking for a wounded bull either. I will get a better shot on an elk later.

I remember one very similar to this last year on this forum. I said no, wait also. Still say that.
but I have some very respected elk killers that say that shot will work as posted above.

I am watching and listening for more.

I'm taking it. I've practiced a lot and at 25 yards I am comfortable with any kill shot. So I'm sending and arrow right here. Bull shouldn't go far.

I'm shooting right at the top of the Xs the last three posters have placed. So the center of the my X would be where th top of their Xs are. Its onlp a couple of inches higher. But it is above the big brisket bone just in case my arrow happens to wander of to the right a little.

By the way, How do you guys put those little red Xs on there anyhow?

im wondering why you guys chose in front of the shoulder area. im just not seeing the angle being right for a heart shot. the way im looking at it the arrow should come out right behind the opposite side shoulder in front of the heart. i can see a lung being hit in the op side. please explain

If I'm feeling confident in the moment (how are my nerves, does he seem more or less alert than in the photo, etc.), I'm shooting where Cnelk put his X.

I am going to draw and wait until he turns, don't like the angle. Behind the shoulder might get just on side lung, in front of the shoulder I would prefer straight on.

Jeremy, I killed my elk this year on a similar angle but even more quartered to almost a full on frontal and uphill. I went gutless so I'm not sure what all the arrow took out but the RazorTrick tipped arrow disappeared inside him and I watched him fall after he stumbled maybe 20 yards. If I had to guess I'd say it took out heart, lungs and liver and more. I thought briefly about shooting where you put your mark but quickly decided that the choice I made to take the almost frontal was the right choice.

david if it was more of an angle i would understand the shot location and i would pick the same spot as others have. with the spot i put up i would take out both lungs with that angle, to me hes not angled that hard to make a frontal shot. you saw where my arrow entered the bull and how far he ran. if my shot was on this exact angle i think i would have gotten a pass through and not buried the arrow in his hind quarter

Here is a pic of a skeleton of a goat but the skeletal structure would be the same as an elk.
The angle of the pic is close to the angle of the bull posted above only opposite way.

You can see that there are ribs in front of the leg too, plus the opening for esophagus and other vital organs
The lower pic is a cross section of the same goat - that shows the vitals - heart, lungs, etc
With an arrow passing thru the front, it should a put hole in a few major components

I would add that I have shot elk in both the place I marked and the place jerinmn marked.
The expiration time between the two was significant, but the result was the same

Jerinmn, I'm seeing one lung and liver on the x you placed at the angle presented in this picture. Fatal, but I just don't think you will get both lungs at that angle.

I'd take the frontal shot similar to what was shown. Definitely get one lung and likely also hit at least one major vessel like carotid artery or jugular vein, and possibly even heart. All would have similar effects.

tell that to the bull I killed this yr! the only difference is the bull was at a steeper angle towards me. im still sticking with my first post. as cnelk mentioned he has also killed an elk with in the same spot I marked. I still don't quite see the frontal shot on this elk. the way I see it I will get at least on lung and I am more that confident I will catch the bottom of the far side lung. but if im wrong I know I will go through the liver as well and get a pass through. result dead elk.

Jeremy
I reviewed your post of your bull and it looks like that shot may be a bit higher?

Below is a pic of a bull I shot that was positioned similar to the pic above.
You can see the entrance hole in the V of the shoulder.
I held it tight to the V and could have easily taken a frontal too, as I described above

I did hit him high miss judged the yardage. I was aiming where I put my x. my only saving grace was it was a down hill shot.

Jerinmn, My bad. I read the original post that said "I've set you up pretty much at the angle you see this picture " So your shot would be ok but might get just one lung. The original post also said "(he's straight on from you). I thought the shot would be straight on by this remark and in front of the leg would have been better like most others had marked their X. I was confused by the wording. I would consider this shot a quartering toward shot not a straight on. Sorry for my confusion.

I do like the "X marks the spot" and the "whats your next move" posts. Great learning stuff to keep the winter boredom away.
