Location Bugle While Scouting

Hi everyone,

Maybe this is a stupid question & shows my ignorance but here it goes.

Can you use a location bugle while scouting at anytime in July or August while scouting? I thought it might be a quick way, especially at night to see if any elk might be using a particular drainage or area.

Thoughts? Could you get an instinctual reply or would you just be educating elk?

Personally, when i'm scouting I don't want the elk to know i'm there. I just want to observe them. The bulls will bugle during the summer on their own, and of course the cows are always making noise. You can find them without telling them you're there.

I don't want any elk to here my calls as it might educate them to my calling and I really don't want one to come looking for me before I can shoot it.

I have heard bulls bugle in the Summer. It is not common. When scouting, I never carry any calls. One knowledgeable hunter friend claims preseason calling has a major impact on the elk where we hunt. He believes they are pushed back farther, and onto the ranches before the season, by callers going out every weekend in August trying to locate the elk.

That early in summer, you don't want to find the bulls. You want to find the cows and then come season the bulls wont be far behind. So no, we don't use location bugles. Find the beds, water, trails, and feeding areas. The amount of sign will give you an idea of the quantity of elk in the area. Do some map work, then do some map work, and then after that do some map work. Come season, use your map work and your location bugle to find the vocal bulls. Then rely on your scouting trip intel to hunt him.
