Need more volume in my bugle.

I am fairly decent at calling, have actually called in quite a few bulls over the years for myself and friends. But, my bugle lacks volume, not always a bad thing, but there are times I wish I had more. No matter what I try, I can't get any louder.

Any suggestions?

Over the years the two main components of creating more volume that I have found are below.


1) Tube size will directly effect the amount of volume you can produce.

2) The type of diaphragm and how you blow it will also have a effect.

Diaphragm or external reed? What tube?

Any of the tubes with a big baffle (wider on the exit end) on the end will help. Old school guys at the contests use to use the old red plastic bats with the ends cut off to get a bigger sound.

I have one of Elknuts grunt tubes with the wide end, as well as a regular grunt tube that I made and it is about 1 3/4" diameter.
I usually use single reed calls, I don't do very well with doubles or triples.

Toby, #-1- make sure that your reed is in good shape. #-2 -Use a single reed. #-3-When trying to bugle louder MAKE SURE your tongue is not going to the very end of the latex or slightly off of it or you will lose more than 50% of your volume. This is a common mistake for newer elk callers that have been used to a lot of Turkey calling with a mouth reed. Too, you may just need more practice in calling so you can get used to tongue position & proper amount of airflow for lower & higher notes!

Last year it was brought to my attn that I was getting a lot of blow by in my bugle. One I corrected that my volume went up considerably. Maybe you could post an audio and let the gurus have a listen
