Sorry, this might be a stupid question. i know that it has to do with the shape of the land but what is hunting a bench. Can you see a bench on a topo map? What does it look like?

Here you go David. Elk like flat ground to bed, feed, and to travel on. Here's a topo map pic that shows three varying sizes of benches. On a steep hillside, benches are great places to check out for possible elk activity.

Another term you will want to know is 'saddle'.
They are where two ridges slope down together
They are also good places to hunt
