Private Access Elk Hunt Unit 65 CO

Postby Kiwi Bowhunter » 10 30, 2013 •  [Post 1]

I have been offered a spot on a semi guided hunt in Unit 65 CO next Elk archery season. The hunt on offer is on 5000 acres of private land with max of 4 hunters at anytime. Lodging, food, tree stands etc included. Cost of $2750.

I'm an experienced hunter but this would be my first elk hunt and would be a learning experience. Does this hunt sound reasonable? Would this been a good option for a novice Elk hunter with a goal to hunt wilderness pack in style later on?

I think so.
I expect there to be a fair number of elk on the property and the public cant mess them up.
Semi guided services offer you just a little help to do what you normally know and you get a place to stay and meals.

Do some research, ask the outfitter for several references from nonsuccessful hunters he has guided, check with CPW to see if the guy is licensed, Better Business Bureau, these forums, etc. A few outfitters are skunks, so caveat emptor! A guided hunt should be a great education in all aspects of hunting. If all they do is park you in a stand until one of their bulls strolls by, that would be a poor simulation of all that elk hunting encompasses.

what part of 65? I hunt there and know some of the ranches. I have seen some really big bulls killed in 65!

Ridgway area. Not sure about the name of the ranch.
