Early Season WA Hunt in the Books

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 09 10, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Back from my five day early season Washington Roosey hunt. The wapiti were singing a bit but the switch has not really been turned on yet. Was tough to locate them with the rut really not in full action mode in the wilderness area I hunted. Heard or had responses from four different bulls and very, very nearly had a shot at a really nice 6 point. Was busted by a calf on that hunt if you can believe it. The little guy is probably telling stories to his other calf friends back in the bedding area. "Yep, I saw the hunter on the game trail and saved the heard; you might say I was personally responsible for everyone making it back safely today; I'm kind of a hero I guess". :)... Little jerk nose elk. Got into one close call with one PO'ed herd bull also, he was very upset I was close to him and his girls. Was working to get closer on a second setup and the wind shifted and they were gone (big storm moving in caused the thermals to become swirling winds). I was way, way back in an area I hunt and we ended up coming out after dark with headlamps during one of the nastiest thunder, lighting, rain storms I've ever hunted in. After we made it back to camp around 2130, we had to do some drainage trenching as our tents were pretty much floating away. All in all, a good hunt with some action, some extreme weather, and some close encounters. On to Idaho in three days to see if I can call in some bulls for Dotman and DirtErn.. That should be fun.

The little dirt bag isn't supposed to be paying attention. Enjoy Idaho.

Those two days of storming were completely NUTS! Intense thunder, lightning, rain, the works . . . thought I was gonna have to build me an arky, arky. LOL Sounds like you had a great time and some great action. I hope it works out for you in Idaho!
