Legal Tender

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 07 09, 2013 •  [Post 1]

So, most of the permits have been drawn and I assume many of you cats have planned on or have bought your resident or OOS OTC tags. What is a legal elk where you will be hunting come hunting season this fall. Bull only, 3 PT or better, spike, cow, calf, any elk? Regardless, it's getting close 8-)

A legal elk would be a calf, cow or bull. The bull must be a 4pt or better.

In my unit, I can kill ANY Elk for Archery Season, and then for Rifle Season, it switches to Spike ONLY, which I refuse to do. I see no point in purposely shooting an immature bull that may or may not have great potential, I'll never understand that.

This season my luck ran out and did not draw any tags for any sex or species. Fisrt time in my life I was completely skunked. Thus this year it is OTC any bull.

Like Paul and Tyler have said, here in Idaho its any elk for OTC archery for me, too.

I have another chance to draw a controlled hunt tag in the second drawing. We'll see how that goes, plus I have an extra cow tag in my pocket for this year.

Any elk in archery, any elk in gun for a couple weeks then cow only. I love that, bulls until the end then work on filling the freezer.

After looking in the freezer this morning and finding that the wife has it stuffed with EGGO's and popcicles for the grandkids, It looks like a nice juicy calf is all that will fit in there!
