Post Up Your Elk Sounds 2013.. Bugles with Grunts

Getting going pretty good on the Elknut 2013 Post em Up Threads.. Let's jump into Bugles with Grunts. Grunts are intimidating... adversarial in nature. If you hear these in the elkwoods it's not just sometimes, it's all the time, a bull telling you that if you come a step closer, he will potentially rip your head off and throw it over the bank for the wolves. Sorry for the graphic correlation but that's what they mean. Saying that, grunts are not for every encounter, in fact, they are not for a majority of your vocal elk hunting encounters. But, they do have their place. I'll leave the explanation of when to use hard hitting grunts to Mr. Elknut.. Don't forget what these threads are designed for.. You post up your sounds and get feedback from some pretty experienced cats on how to improve your calling.. No thin skin here, and, it's free!

I have listened to your "getting mean" sound and the grunts on that one are awesome (at least they sound that way to me). comparing it to mine I just posted I think I need to bring more air in between grunts and also lay off of the voice part on the grunt? Everyone please comment, green horn here looking for advice!

Also, how crucial is it to get that lip bawl in the call on this one? I suppose that is just depending on the mood of the situation.....? thoughts?

I really liked your bugle. My suggestion is don't try to eliminate the voice inflection when you grunt use even more air and more guteral on the the popping. Your well on your way.

Thank you. I learned from this man's calling and advice in large part. You really need to sit down with this sound clip and play, pause, play, and pause. It's the mechanics of the grunt and it shows you how to chuckle at the same time. Listen to the sucking of air for grunts and then listen how they lessen for the chuckles. (Keep in mind if he wasn't right next to the microphone, you wouldn't hear the sucking of air on the chuckles) When you chuckle, you are doing the exact same thing as a grunt except for varying your sucking of air and your speed. You are very close and I'm confident you will be better than me very soon (I realize that's not saying a lot).

You will actually gain a ton by listening to everything he had posted.

Thanks a lot for the feed back guys! Not trying to be better than anyone here just trying to learn from ya

. I have found it difficult to use my phone as a recording device and playing with the distance so it doesn't affect the sound. But I know I need to work on the air part, in and out, and play with my voice on the grunt. If I remember correctly on ElkNut's DVD's he almost just makes the grunt like a longer bark and adds the air (huffing). Went through the package of dvds I bought and have just been playing around with the sounds since. I think its time to go back through them with a fine tooth comb and fix some things. Recording these sounds and having input from experienced people like you guys has helped a lot! I really appreciate it guys. Just hoping to get the sounds down and understand them all so when it comes time September I can put my hands on another bull!
Will post more recordings again after some practice.

the first set of bugles, using the herd master reed, second set is the raging bull reed, from the sounds of it i might have to replace the RB, my thoughts, bugles are a touch long, grunts seem ok, not as deep or hard pounding as id like. whats your thoughts?

Very nice IMO JJ, really, very damn good. Humor me and try to start a bugle with a high note, drop to a growl or lip bawl, and come back up to a high note before you hit those pretty sounding grunts

Everything is very much improved from last year, especially your grunts. I wonder where you learned from?

RJ: You are sounding pretty good this morning!

Jerinmn: Those are my two go to reeds mainly because of the contrast between them. I didn't hear all that much difference in yours. You can really push that Herd Master much higher.

thanks guys, i have a great teacher here in CO, ive been listening to everyone on here as well. some of you have tones in your bugles that im still trying to figure out how you do it.

ww, for some reason i struggle to hit really high notes. and if i hit them i can hold them very long, do you have any sound bits using the herd master and hiiting high notes? if so id like to hear them and try and copy them. im trying not to sound like a broken recored when im in the elk woods.

Sorry, I wish I did. But my computer is so screwed up right now that I can't post either sounds or pictures. All I can tell you is that I can produce around seven different octives and whistle Dixie on the Herd Master. I always say the Herd Master call can go where no elk has gone before. They should have named it Star Trek. LOL!

A good thing to remember is don't try so hard. Lots of guys try to force it with more air pressure. Instead, tongue pressure and reed control are the keys to good calling.

TTT.. Let's hear em gentlemen (and ladies). If you're dialed in, I've got it.. Please offer your constructive recommendations for potential improvement on those who have posted up. For the new cats or those who wish to just get some feedback (you've gotta trust me on this) throw out your sounds and you'll be pleasantly surprised at how many experienced callers are willing to guide you on the path to improvement. These threads have helped me over the past few years and I'm extremely gratefull to many.. RJ

I think your grunts are good.I liked them.You use more voice than I do but they sound very good.I personally would do what you did, but add 2 more of the louder grunts to your series. Every situation is a little different though, so you have to use your own discretion. Hope this helps.

I'm not experienced enough to teach but I'd say that if you've only been calling a week, then you'll be just fine by sept if you stay at it. I'll let the pros give you tips

Not too shabby for just starting out.. Believe me when I say this, you actually sound better than many hunters I've heard in the elk woods. The growl/resonance you mention is usually nothing more than a throaty growl before and during your bugle notes. You used three or four grunts which is about right (although as Troy said, bulls will sometimes use more than this amount, or, even just use grunts with no bugle before or after). Also, work on sucking in air louder between each grunt.. Your spacing on the grunts is good though.. Remember, grunts are intimidating and honestly, you won't have too many situations when grunts will be used to your advantage.. There are a few however that warrant being that confrontational so the bugle with grunts is good to have in your arsenal. Looking forward to you next offering OS hunter.. heres something that helped me out. id just put in my call and make all kinds of crazy noises and see what comes out. I mainly did it to drive my loving wife crazy but I found a few noises that I had to figure out how I did it and use it. don't try to make a specific sound when doing this. just play around.

Thanks for the advice! I think I'll try to practice hitting and holding notes so I get the muscle memory down. Then transitions will become easier and I can put them into a solid bugle with practice. My wife has already sent me to the garage... :lol:

Here is the real deal. This is me in the heat of battle. If you want to practice bugles and grunts... Here you go! Can't remember if I was using an Orange Enrager or Troy's Secret Weapon on this bull. I think I used both calls on this bull. He came in several different times.

That was really impressive Jason. The fact that you can use all of those reeds so well is crazy.
