Montana hunt?

I'm looking to send in for unit 410 in montana on the Missouri River breaks, does anyone have any info on how this unit has been the past few years??

That's a mile long subject. If you notice that and the 380 unit have the most applicants. The problem with 410 is numbers of hunters. If you talk to anyone who hunts it they will tell you it's not easy to lose the crowds. Some use boats to come from the water but low water levels can mean 100+ yards of deep muck between land and the boat. I've heard hororr stories of bulls stuck in the mud and guys using plywood to make bridges to get back and forth.

That said obviously you've figured out there are big bulls there and there are. Water can be scarce and elk can take refuge on private land where there are water tanks.

If you are going to apply for that unit you definitely better keep researching and come up with a plan.

If I were you I'd consider 620 on the north shore.

1 more thing: Anyone who has been there will tell you that if it rains your vehicle is going N0WHERE. I mean stranded city. Like slick bald tires on smooth wet ice! The muck on the roads there turns to gumbo and even mean 4 wheel drive machines get stuck. Make sure you carry enough water in the vehicle.

I hunt 410 and will tell you that there are people everywhere that you look. A lot of the area has burned in the last couple of years also. Even with this I still go back because I am getting to know the area well and I always get into elk everyday.

Thanks for the help guys, planebow, is there places where a guy can hike in farther to get away from people, and how big of bulls does a guy expect to see in this unit?

So far I have not found anywhere to get away from the people. I have seen some 350 class bulls but have never been able to get close enough for a shot.

I don't understand why 380 is so popular since its spike only.

410 sounds fun but I like my hunting area being 45 minutes till I have boots on the ground from home. Not 2 -3 hours

Any one here hunt the bob Marshall without horses? Is there any elk within walking distance of a road?

410 is any elk not just spikes. I am getting to old to hike into the bob, but it would be a lot closer to where I live.
