Was he small, big or huge?

Postby Lefty » 02 17, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Not rack size
but the elk you have had shot oppurtunities, called- in , near encounters etc.
Did the elk seem bigger in size, or smaller for the distance they were standing.
Elk are big and everytime Ive drawn Ive picked the small spot and the target seemed plenty big.
Even as close as the animal was he seemed far off or smaller.
The last elk I brought in at 22 yards certainly didnt seem that close but plenty of lethal target at 43 and 37 yet the elk seemed "small"
Or just my mind playing games!

They always seem huge. I start hunting antelope with my bow on August 15th every year and it usually takes me a week or so to fill all my tags. Right after that I go into elk hunting so they always seem so big after hunting antelope. As far as distance.....Sometimes I'm right on and sometimes I'm off by 15 yards either way lol.

I know what you mean. they are big.
But there have been several times when looking thru the peep my mind is shouting back at me about how small they look.
it must be the low light because of the trees or maybe the size of the surrounding timber.

A few years ago I was out deer hunting with my brother. After seeing several branch antlered bulls over about three days, he asked me if they were larger tan the ones I killed where I hunt elk. I looked at him a moment and realized he was asking a serious question. He was astonished at how big they are. I replied they were the same. He knows there are some that are larger than others. To answer the question here, I must admit that I think I have accustomed to seeing elk for what they are. They seem to get larger only on the pack out.

Several years I broke my all time record. Called in a bull within 3 yards of my location. He came in silent and behind me. Then after realizing I had no shot, the only thing I could think of is that's one huge animal and man those antlers are daggers. John On A Stick! ;)

Right with you there! Last year the bulls I had close to me just looked like big deer. Once we started breaking down the bull, holy crud it seemed huge.
