So far

Postby Lefty » 09 04, 2025 •  [Post 1]

I headed up to camp Sunday evening.
Glassed up a bigger bull before the sun was up. The bull disappeared in the trees I ran back and spent three more hours unpacking, and setting up camp.
It was hot, 93° when I left camp at 1:30.
The wind was all wrong for an approach on that bull.
I started gently working a slow play at 6:00. Evidently he left the timber.

Tuesday was unbearably hot. I didn't put much effort into the woods, I figured the elk weren't willing to play anyway.
I did come across some elk legs and a butt in the willows. I worked my way in towards the willows crunching all the way. Couple of cow calls and I realize it wasn't likely a bull . I hung her on quietly for 20 minutes. I made a few more cow calls. And headed back for the truck.

Last night I had a handful of cows and calves pastsblow me They showed no interest in meeting their new neighbor.

Tonight in a different area the cows that I found were using the same playbook as the night before.
Hoping maybe there is a bull hanging with them.
I made a single cow mew, and got a squealing bull bugle back. I thought I better cut some distance.
I grabbed my gear turned around and they're the bull was staring at me at 65.
A little 5x5 strutting stuff, full of mud, And he was sporting a 9-ft tall quakie in his antlers.

IHe was bugling and chuckling like a pro, chasing back and forth like he was protecting cows.
I'm just going to assume that he was disappointed that the girls up on the hill weren't coming down to him

I kind of forgot to mention Wednesday night I could tell there was a fire northwest and it was about 15 miles away.
Waking up yesterday morning the smoke was so bad I was coughing eyes were running and burning even when the sun was up higher You couldn't tell her the sun was at the smoke was so thick. So I left for most of the day.
This morning I could have run into that same heard I left them yesterday a little over a mile away.
The wind started playing tricks,
Which really wore my legs out and I was about exhausted by noon.
Came back to camp and did a bunch of camp duties I'll head back out for the late afternoon and evening for a left off this morning

I guess I'm doing this all wrong.

Too young guys, we first year elk hunting and they each killed little 6x6s
400 yd from the road a thousand yards from my camp.
