Getting Ready 2025... Tips?

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 07 31, 2025 •  [Post 1]

As we all ready ourselves for the upcoming elk season, what are a couple of things (1-2 in the interest of brevity) that we need focus on to ensure we are ready/locked in for the pending event? Trim our hooves so we aren't in pain during hikes? Work on our calling and elk language interpretation prowess (i.e. Mr. Elknut) so we don't do or "say" the wrong thing when it matters? Physical conditioning? Remote scouting? You see where I'm going here... Please, offer a few tips on what us, the average hunter should be focusing on to maximize our potential success when we finally deploy this fall in the best season of all.... the upcoming Wapiti season. It's just around the corner ;)

Accuracy and comfort in handling/shooting our weapon of choice. None of it matters if you can't be ethical and well-practiced

I think mental preparedness is the biggest obstacle many elk hunters have to work out. Anxious hunters watch hunting movies and read a lot of success stories that make elk hunting look quick and easy. Don't let yourself be fooled. It is rare that elk come running into your first call and beg you to shoot them. Too often hunters give up after a week of hard hunting with no good shot opportunity. By that time, they are worn out and ready to throw in the towel. This is the time when you will find out if you are a dedicated elk hunter or are just in it for the glory.
Too often elk hunters try to force a situation to get a shot only to be busted and end up spooking the elk. Be patient. There is a time for action but there are times to back off or to just wait. I have called one every half hour and had the elk come in after two hours of waiting. Sometimes I call once and have them come in two hours later. It does not matter if you are on the ground or in a stand. Be patient and wait. If you are calling solo, be sure to call from a location that the elk can't check out from out of your bow range. After you call, move to a location where you can get a shot without being detected. Good luck
