There are two big six by sixes and a big rag horn and that thicket of quakies on the left side.
My daughter said there's about 40 cows in there right now.
Yep that's no telephoto lens That's my cheap phone
Interstate I-15 and the railroad track
And if I look closely in some areas in that little thicket I can see elk.

I would not know what to do in country you can see farther than 50-60 yards. What’s the plan Lefty?

It’s early in the season. I would watch them and pattern them and then try to cut them off making their way to or from that patch tomorrow.

This location has a long history. It has always seemed to be a safe place for elk.
Some of the locals get a kick out of people that think they can put the sneak on them.

Maybe just maybe a high wind situation I might give it a try and advance with a Montana type decoy.

This year we have been seeing them in there since the third week of August

I see plenty of opportunities for a good stalker who knows what he is doing to make it to the quakie patch. But you have to remember, the elk use this area as a safe zone. If you bust them out of there, you'll probably spend the rest of you hunt just trying to relocate them.

I like IS's plan. But you have known they hang out there for over two weeks now and you should have had plenty of time by now to pattern them out.

There are a few things you need to clarify. When was that picture taken? The post was dated 9-18. Those aspens should have been golden instead of green. and if the date is correct, with 3 bulls and 40 cows in there, it should be non stop, balls to the wall bugling and sparing going on. That all would make it a perfect opportunity. If not for a kill, but for one heck of an exciting day!

I can make that stalk.
But for me there's just something wrong hunting elk from a freeway

We have so much going on right now and physically today I can't do much of anything other than glass from the pickup
This is today Friday the quake is down below me are at about 7100 ft
I think we have only had 3 nights below freezing

Yesterday the woods just blew up with bugles
Today is the same thing.
Partner Andrew is about a half mile away from
Where I'm parked
He's sitting on a little bit of water and has cows bedded right near him
The bulls in there somewhere and he's just hoping the wind holds and the bull makes his rounds.

Better to try and fail than to never try at all. Good luck!

There are three challenges that I see. There is only one direction you van approach the elk from, so the wind has to be right and stay that way.
There are 43 sets of eyes, ears and 43 noses you have to avoid.
You are parked along the freeway. Many non-hunters and rifle hunters will be more than happy to spoil your hunt. I would like to slip in unseen by man or beat in the dark and have someone drive my truck away.
If you can get close, then you might give out a strong bugle and quickly move forward a few yards and wait.
Then there is the question, do I want to get an elk on a drive by shooting? Personally, I am not too fond of the idea, but I have no issue with anyone that would.

My daughter and I actually did "try" .
Once we crossed the creek, it was 90 minutes to get situated. I did get a raghorn 20 yards from my daughter,,, problem was she wanted the herd bull

Done right that stalk is doable with a handful of elk...

Go up in the woods, I dont like hun5ing so near highway traffic

We talked with some Pennsylvania elk archers camped nearby. They just shake their head, they come back from a tough morning hunt. then see the highway elk :?

The elk are still in there 3 days in a row.
My daughter saw the bull today when we came in for lunch.

The wind would be good for a stalk today however it's 81°how about that for an excuse

I can spot some of the elk inside the quakies now that we've lost some leaves
