What did you do today to get ready for your 2024 Elk Hunt?

Postby Elkhunttoo » 05 29, 2024 •  [Post 1]

Us Idaho guys are 93 days away from the 2024 archery elk hunt. Time to start getting prepared!!!

A little bit of a count down here, post what you are doing each day to get ready for this years hunt! Let’s Go!!

I just put in for an Idaho rifle draw hunt with my brother in laws. I’m torn. It’s a great tag if we draw it but I love hunting with my bow. Either way can’t wait for the season to get here. Excited to do some summer scouting along the way

The access roads probably won't be open until mid-June. I will go up asap, put up approximately 6 cams, and recheck them every 3-4 weeks until the opener.

I am still exercising 5 days each week. I guess getting ready for something is as good of a reason as any.

I had a good chuckle today. I am out with my digital camo backpack walking with the dog. I just got a haircut. I had on green pants. A lady is driving by, stops, rolls down the window, and says, "Thanks for your service!". I haven't ever been in the service!

So what do I do with that thank you? Well, since I cannot use it, I am going to give it to RJ and Swede and I think Lefty were all in the service. So since I got it and can't use it, here is a "Thank you for your service from some random lady driving down the road in MN". You guys can have it and add it to your collection!

I hardly know what to do with "thank you for your service" expressions of gratitude. I served during the Viet Nam war. Back then the salutes I got from civilians was a raised arm with their middle finger extended. We were loved by our generation like the cops who were called "pigs".
In those days I hitchhiked nearly everywhere I went on my own time. It was cheaper and faster than traveling by bus, and I could not afford a taxi. I even hitchhiked from State to State at time and could tell you some crazy stories about those adventures. Even in those times wearing the uniform meant I would be picked up and given a free ride. Life was good. After more than 55 years of marriage, I am still thankful that one mother in America never warned her daughter about sailors.
In other words, you do not need to continue to thank me for my service. It was a pleasure. For the most part even the goofballs that seemed to blame the service men for the war were a hoot. I do remember one evening in San Pedro CA when I and another sailor got into an ugly fight. We were confronted by some young men that jumped out of two cars to attack us. Even that incident came out ok as I kicked one fellow as hard as I could in the crotch. Another I hit squarely in the nose so hard that his blood was sprayed back onto my jumper. I was too busy to note what my friend was up to, but when we ran into a nearby liquor store that was open one of our attackers came and complained we left a couple of them pretty badly hurt. A cop soon came and got us out of there. Just remember, even a scared rabbit will fight.

Swede, I ain't taking it back. it is yours to keep. You were away from your family in a place I am sure you didnt want to be. So you deserve a thanks from someone who wasnt there. It wasn't even a long expression of gratitude, just a short one. You should be able to find a shelf in a closet somewhere to store it. Just don't let it get wet.....

I sat this wallow the majority of last season. I sat it on the 14th and towards evening I could hear elk moving into the area right at about dark. Unfortunately I had to go back to work on the 15-17…when I went back this joker at came in and did a photo shoot without me :(

Hopefully he gives the the chance this season in just over 90 days :D

Wallows are very unreliable by themselves. Be sure to sit at one where good game trails are close at hand and there is good drinking water. I might even spice up the place with a milk jug filled with molasses if bears will not be a problem. Hang it on something secure and take a 16-penny nail and punch a few holes in the bottom.

Unfortunately I can’t do the molasses due to state rules

I shouldn’t have put wallow…this is at a spring…the bulls will wallow in it but it is mainly a water hole…here is a better angle of the spot

The spring/wallow looks good to me. I suspect the elk are only in the area about every two weeks. It may seem like a long wait but it pay off can well in the end.

This bull and his cows came in last year about 20-25 minutes after I got out of my stand.

Went to Home Depot and bought some electrical boxes to make my DIY trail cameras boxes. I got 5 trail cameras for Christmas's this last year so I need to make boxes to keep them protected from the stinking bears.

In the picture of my son a few post back you can see one of the ones I made last year…my kids did a great job on the painting to blend them in.

Yesterday I shot my bow for the first time in months. My shooting was ok but can stand improvement. I was shaky and had a hard time holding steady. I plan to shoot from now on until hunting season. Right now, I am going on my daily three-mile hike.

I finally got around to tuning and gluing my outserts on my BE ximpacts today after they've been floating around the house for the past 6 weeks  Have been a committed Valkyrie archery shooter but they have been inconsistent with their inventory and quite frankly, I am tired of being "married" to their broadhead deal. Think I am pretty content with the new build; similar weight, foc and broadhead itself. Hoping for minimal tuning issues :?

I shot my bow again yesterday and there was a significant improvement. The first three shots were in the bullseye. I will need to continue shooting so I can hold steady on the target longer. I gave myself the day off from hiking but was back at it again this morning.

Put florescent targets on the archery back stop

Check the arrows out make sure they were all the same weight .

Strapped on my release I wasnt sure weather to laugh or cry.......................

The last day of our season: we had hunted hard but just couldn't get a shot at any of the 3 bulls. and still passed on the meat shots on cows.

It was late afternoon. I was taking Andrew back to his pickup, then asked, "Hey can you help me load a few things in the back of my pickup?"
Pulling into camp were 3 bucks ,,,,,Our rule no shooting big game from camp,,, that rule was quickly rejected. The 24 " 4x4 was hanging with forkies. And we were unofficially done elk hunting.
I slipped out of the truck while Andrew videoed.
I ranged the buck, 30 yards! Chip shot :D
As I drew my bow the arrow went skyward and landed in front of the buck,,, and the buck sort of mosieyed off. At the time we thought I had placed my release on, not through my D loop.

So back to this evening 6/11/24,, I discovered my release opens sometimes on my own,,,,,,, , And that buck has nine lives. I saw that buck 3 ti,mes after LST, then for 5 seconds during the Idaho rifle hunt, then a minute after the legal shooting time one evening in the November Montana deer hunt,,, then mid day, mid November, I was standing on the Idaho side,,, the buck was on the Montana side  Oh well he was only 24 inches.

I'm in a holding pattern for a few more days. The Evergreen State's special permit draw results should be out any day now. No OOS tag this year so am hoping to draw something good in WA; it's a long shot though.

The Oregon big game draw results came in this morning. I drew a bow deer tag and bow elk tag. My son drew an excellent late season deer tag. I am more excited for him than I am about my results. I need to go on my hike now and shoot my bow this afternoon. I definitely need to get ready.

I went out to shoot this afternoon and it was windy. I was shaky enough anyway, but the wind made things a little tougher. I could hold steady for the first few shots, but after that I had to release pretty quick. I always wonder if this is the year I can't get back into good shape, but the Lord has always brought me through. Praise the Lord.

Due to you jerks, and mostly our resident lead jerkus, I added another mile to my bike ride this morning that has a nasty hill. Believe me, I was not fond of my association with you, ahem, gentlemen and ladies, when I was mid-hill in first gear and struggling. 5 mile ride. Thighs burning.

I would be proud to think I may have had a part in getting your lazy hide off the sofa and outside exercising. I just wish you could come hunt with me, in great shape, so we could pack out a couple of elk together. The only person I allow to be a lazy jerk in my hunting camp is ME!

Not sure how often you are supposed to re string them…ours are 7 and 9 years…starting to look fuzzy and frayed…I’ve waxed them the last few years but it was time…$165 per bow to get it done…our bows sure aren’t the newest so we debated and decided we liked them and planned on using them for a while still so we bit the bullet

Checked the trail cams
I had more bull elk at the bear bai tttrail cams than bears

I left one remote camera all winter in a dark canyon sitting at 7800 feet, less than a mile from the continental divide Montana/ Idaho The elk were in that canyon for a week at the end of February

Nothing here either. One good friend drew a great WA elk tag that I'll hopefully be able to tag along on some when I get back from Idaho. Don't think I'll personally hunt elk this year.

I put out 6 trailcams today in a 3 mile loop. I know it's 75 days until hunting but it gets me in the woods! I will probably check them every 3 weeks.

For the first time since starting my shot routine earlier this month, I felt good shooting. It seemed like for the first time my bowstring came back effortlessly. I was able to hold steady and hit the bullseye. Over the summer I hope to continue to gain strength and increase the number of shot where my bowstring comes back really easy and steady. I also continued my morning and evening exercise routine.

I still have my Mathews Halon 32. The only problem it has ever had is the nut that draws the string.

I shot my old PSE bow yesterday for the first time in years. It needs some adjusting but is good except for that same nut behind the string.

Took the family up and hiked into what looked like might be a good waterhole. It was nothing like what it looked like on the maps so I didn’t leave any trail cameras. Wish I would have went to the other side of the mountain that I know and put up the cameras it those spots.

Finally got around to shooting my bow and new arrow build. It's spot on!! Feeling pretty steady out to 50 but hoping to keep moving back till 50 feels like a chipshot. Also have been legging up the pack pony. Pretty excited to bring along a horse this season. More for companionship and hopefully, a meat wagon as well :D

I am trying to get the rust out of the nut, but some of it seems to stick no matter what I do. I have not given up and I am happy with what I have. Elk hunting is still great.

Rancho,
What does "legging up" mean? Are you going in griz country? Having a horse around in griz country would make for a better nights sleep I would think.

I ordered some more practice tips for my arrows. Was down to 4.

Rode my bike Saturday for 16 miles. Today for 5. Legs starting to feel like I have made progress.

My limit is 50 yards as well. Any longer and that arrow is in flight just too long. It gives that elk time to move after the arrow is released. But practicing out well beyond that is a very good idea. Besides making shorter shots easier, there is the possibility that you get an arrow in a bull and he stops at 72.142898389763 yards to your (or my) feeble attempt at cow calls and you need to be able to get another one in him. I say feeble, because every time I have shot a bull, my mouth is super dry and calling is difficult!

Building his endurance, he's going from 500ft +/- to 10,000ft so trying to get him shaped up so he doesn't struggle as bad as I do , nope fortunately no grizzly I just struggle camping away from the truck alone so I figure Jorge(horhay) will make good sasquatch bait if nothing else lol fixing to get shoes and pads in the next month as well

Well I didnt want to say Jorge was gonna be griz bait, but since you went there, yes, I am quite confident any Sasquatch will go after Jorge first. At least I think so. Swede would know for sure as he is much closer to Sasquatches on the evolutionary chain than I am. In fact, I think he has some in his direct genealogy.

Great looking pony Rancho!

You said it Tigger! Legs and Lungs!

And my left calf is just not cooperating…tried a slow jog again tonight and almost immediately it was over. I can jog in place without any problem so the work outs are changing.

Still waiting on Idaho draw results. And my bow is still in the shop getting new strings.

As far as list of things to do I need to make my DIY trail cam boxes for my new cameras.

LOL. I thought I drew first blood, and you were just returning the compliment. Your comment on Sasquatch reminds me I have a solar powered yard ornament that has little red lights that I call chupacabra. It reminds me of the Mexican goat sucker that prowls around in their southern jungles. Watch out, Chupi may get you. :D

Okay, while you slackers were laying on the coach eating bonbons, I shot my bow last night and went for another 5 mile bike ride.

Only shot out to 30 yards. Shot well for the first time. Can tell I need to strengthen my back muscles.

After eating my bonbon I jumped up off the couch and went and got my bow. New strings are on :D

Shot last night for the first time and felt really good. Definitely some sighting in to do with the new strings but the flight of the arrows looked good. Didn’t make it 5 miles but I have hit the treadmill the last few days and it doesn’t hurt my calf so I will be staying with that for a while. If I get new battery’s for my stationary bike I might use it some too

I just talked with my friend that drew an awesome WA elk tag, and his plans for the hunt are pretty.... intense. Looking at the map, anywhere we might want to hunt is going to be several miles in and 2000-4000' in elevation gain. Good thing I've been working out! Going to start doing lots of weighted step ups and lunges starting now.

Great idea on working out with those weighted step ups 7mm. You will be in better condition to carry your tree stand up the tree and to hang it. I usually only hang a couple of stands in a day before I get tired out.
I suspect I could do more if I prepared myself by using weighted step ups. Personally, I bring my stand up on the drop line, but do carry my pack up and down the tree on my back. :D

The neighbor who taught me how to shoot rifle, shotgun and archery drew a coveted New Mexico trophy bull tag . We spoke for an hour today on how as a 81-year-old he is going to kill a big New Mexico bull with a short-range weapon,
Muzzleloader. I dont have any worries about his shooting   He told me today he has it narrowed down to 11 bullets    for his muzzleloader

He has hooked up with an older fellow who guided that country 40 years ago and they plan to pack hunt( on foot :o )

Today we mostly spent time discussing the use of a cow call. All I want him to do is be competent at making a mew preferably with a diaphragm.

First 2 shots from 20 yards tonight. I will take it. Still sighting it in from getting the new strings but it is shooting great. Tomorrow I’m taking my family back to the hills. Going to stay the night and set up some trail cameras up on a top ridge we have spent a lot of time on but haven’t put many trail cameras on in the past.

Ho-hum, did a short hike today as it was raining and I got up late (side note, is there anything better than laying in a warm comfy bed listening to it rain???).

Rearranged my calls into my fancy dancy new Wapiti River Outdoors call organizer (thanks RJ!!). Deciding if I should organize them alphabetically by name or color. Which is more likely to result in me shooting a bull this year?

Jumped on the Peleton bike today and did 1 hour hill ride. Claims I rode just short of 20 miles, burned 800 calories. Felt good to get back on there. I've been doing more strength training the last couple months, but I think it's time to fire the cardio back up.

I cannot measure the calories burned but shivering in a tree stand is a good way to lose weight. I lose several pounds that way each year. I prefer to be a little cold rather than being bundled up in clothes.

Finally took them to the Goodwill.

We actually have a pretty good setup here at home. Big padded floor training area, bench and Peloton. Both my wife and I workout 4-5 days a week. The Peleton is one of my favorite pieces of equipment. I've had knee issues and the bike has allowed me to really increase my cardio trai ing in a low impact way. Now I can train on it all year long, right at home, don't have to go anywhere.

We're upgrading the bench press to a squat rack with a pull up bar. Will definitely increase the clothes hanging space.

Took the kiddos to a 3D target course and had a blast! Never thought I'd get out-shot by an 8yr old but in my defense, it is awfully difficult to be accurate with a monkey on your back

In my best efforts to one-up 7mm, I rode my bike 21.2 miles on Saturday. thank goodness he didnt ride 30 miles! Shot my bow as was not impressed.

Saturday night went to a great local concert. Had pulled pork sandwich and slaw. Concert was fabulous. Food was not. Never got out of bed or off the couch all day on Sunday. A beautiful day wasted. Feeling much better today. That sucked.

Saturday night went to a great local concert. Had pulled pork sandwich and slaw. Concert was fabulous. Food was not. Never got out of bed or off the couch all day on Sunday. A beautiful day wasted. Feeling much better today. That sucked.

Great work Tigger! I'll add 30 minutes to my ride today just to give you a new goal. I'll have to put a towel under the bike to catch all the sweat though. Yuck.

There's nothing like a good bout of food poisoning to lay you up for a day or two. Usually results in a decent amount of weight loss though! Focus on the positives Tigger!

Really nice set up 7mm

Took the family camping Friday night and set up 4 more trail cams on Saturday…never had a camera on this wallow/spring before…it’s been fairly active so far…not sure how many bulls I will get in the summer here but there should be some nice bucks in this area

Was only able to dedicate an hour today. I tried to chase Tigger down, but ended up about half a mile short. I generally try to keep my heart rate below 80% but I let it fly a little today. Felt good when I was done.

20.1 miles on the bike today and no sign of 7mm behind me. I kept looking back. I did see a woman who was about 80 years old. I don’t think that was 7mm. :?:

Looks like a fun place to hunt Rancho. Not to stinking steep.

I'm and expert of camouflage Tigger. You just never know where I'll pop up.

I took the day off today. How else would I choose to celebrate our nation's independence but by doing hours of yardwork and getting sunburned. Back at it tomorrow.

As I sit here typing I hear fireworks popping off in the night. Why not? It is a great day to celebrate. I got in my three mile hike this morning before it got hot, and I shot my bow this evening after sunset. I am feeling good. I just don't care to light off fireworks. Besides it is too dry to mess with them anywhere but over water or a large, paved parking area.

Today I walked on the treadmill this morning… picked up 2 more trail cameras for our group… and going to shoot the bow this evening

Greatwapiti-Looks like you are getting some action

Not sure I could last 15 minutes in an 80 degree work out

Today I went to work and was dreaming of the mountains. Went over a bunch of last years footage and trail cam videos

It is hot and dry even in the mornings here. Still, I am going out for my daily three-mile hike and shoot my bow. I go out for the hike early and shoot after sundown. I just hope the elk appreciate all of the effort I put in so we can enjoy some quality time together.

Posted a video of last week’s scouting trip with my family…I have a spring/wallow on this video that I really wish I would’ve had a trail camera on the last few years. I’m tempted to put a tree stand on it this year but it might be mainly a night wallow. Swede needs to take a peek at it for me and see what he thinks…if the video isn’t enough info for you Swede you could always make a quick trip to Idaho and tell me what you think ;)

I have my tags and am shooting well enough again. I have been doing my exercise and all, but this heat is getting to a big problem. My old hunting area including several tree-stand locations is toast now. Several more stand locations will probably go up in smoke today. I am glad I did not get a tag for that area this season, but the unit I plan to hunt is also very vulnerable to fire.

My area doesn’t have any fires yet but I’m kinda worried about what the next few weeks will be. We are dry dry in this area and the forecast doesn’t look like that’s going to change.

Worked out this morning and shooting again this evening

Mostly cows and calves on the cameras for now…that is mostly what I get in the summer. I have my cameras on video mode and I had cows and calves walking by the on camera for over an hour. Most I could count at any one time was 14. I’m guessing there was a little over 30-35 in the group. They were just moving through the saddle for quite a while

Hot and super dry in my area

Dug the bow back out for some practice. 50yds is feeling pretty solid but going to keep backing her out to get extra cozy. Have taken a break from elk prep for getting my house built and rides on my mustang. Not having working plumbing is one thing in the mountains, it's another in your day to day life :? I did manage to sneak in a trim on Jorge to keep his feet in check. Shoes going on next month

so in addition to the garage fridge, the air conditioner went out this weekend as well. Last night was miserable sleeping until early this morning when it cooled down. When it was time to get up for the bike ride, I rolled over and said forget it.

good news, air conditioner is working. Actually it is a heat pump. Fridge is shot. anyone have one they want to donate? You would, of course, have to deliver it. :o

Hit the gym this morning - doing a bunch of cardio - three days a week.
Hit the range every other morning to practice at 50 - 90 yards (90 yards to make the 70 yards and under shots easy(ish) - my personal limit is 60 yards, but if a 400" bull is standing broadside at 70...)
Yes, I am addicted to elk. No, I don't need help, I just need a tag.

Well, I got sidetracked,
I would like to guess that it is the 6x6 buls tracks in the mud that I bumped

.
I bumped him from a shady spot above the overlook where you can keep an eye on the spring below him
So this will be a serious alternative to where I typically hunt elk.

Still shooting my bow and hiking three miles per day. It must be the heat, but the hikes are getting harder. I can't wait to get up in the mountains. The west has a lot of fires this summer. I hope your hunting area is not wiped out. I see some large areas are blackened and have fire fighters all over them.

Oh oh,, been spending time wondering when I am going to run across my field knife, mini lights headlamp, survival stuff and gloves, that had been in my other hunting day pack.

My wife thinks she is a minimalist and some sort of super organizer,,, There are only so many places I keep stuff,,, So did I put them in safe storage? or did she!!! but Im not asking for a while

Uh, if someone could tell me where my tripod is I would appreciate it. How do you lose a tripod? Wait, I have two 16 year old boys.....

Family vaca. I did absolutely nothing for elk hunting since my Wed bike ride.

My wife is a great organizer too. Fortunately, I learned many years ago to put things up and not leave them lying around. My hunting and camping stuff goes into my room or the garage in a cabinet. Happy wife, happy life.

I thought maybe I could have put the stuff it some place safe,,but its still not turning up

My biggest worry,,, I emptied my old pack before I started bear hunting mids may, along with a new Duck oven jacket. And my wife hauled a bunch of stuff to the Desert Industries  donation center

Thank you for the generous offer.
My FIL gave me the knife: gutted and skinned moose , bears, deer ,elk fox coyote and bread a few upland game too. While packing last night I came acroos my wifes hunting knife stored with the 4 knives from my dad.

My wifes knife is a folding blade, I keep tags and tag wire in the sheath.

My latest scouting trip…down to crunch time now…lots to do around the house and lots of hunting stuff still to get ready…hopefully the wind will slow down a bit so I can shoot tonight.

Swede: if you check this video out the saddle all the cows are in is a spot I’m thinking I will be hanging a stand this year if I get the time to go before season

I ran up to check on my wifes knife,,,it was sharp so I tossed it into the pack pile.

Then I noticed paper towel sticking out of my snow goose bag,,,,,
I don't recall doing it, but I packed the bag for late season muzzleloader, in December knife, lights survival stuff,, all in there.

Waterproofed 2 pair of boots today

Stayed alive. Whole family got Covid about a week ago. Kids recovered immediately, wife and I have been slower. I've had a really hard time sleeping and I'm really dragging. Hope to get back into my routine next week.

My wife mentioned she didn't like seeing the " mess" in my room, ( closing the door" was not an option for her  ) Ive been moving all my clean hunting and hiking gear into one of our daughter's room, not a man cave but a catch all for my stuff.
Since the end of last season, I had one place to pile "stuff" hunting-related.
Archer stuff
Hunting clothes that are to kept reduced scent-free
Rifle stuff
backpacking stuff

Well, today I sorted gear for my new day pack all against the wall,
And a couple of storage containers, One is all the "extras" to "get used" in archery hunting including calls, body wipes, scent-free sprays, and a few little extras put in the kill kit
Also doing the same for really bad weather stuff, boots, insulated bibs, snow camo, gloves, rainwear, gaiters stuff I hope not to use.

28 more days left for me and it's getting harder to not wish the rest of the summer away. Kids go back to school earlier and earlier each year. Only 4 more sundays at the archery course with my oldest
My pack is packed, saddle bags loaded, trailer lights fixed. Just need to throw the horse in and hit the black top!

You folks and your early packing. I lay it out about a week in advance and pack the day before I leave. Otherwise I forget where I packed it or even if I brought it. You must have minds like steel traps!

Been doing some biking, rucking, and some shooting. Adjusted my sights last night. Hopefully that isnt a rabbit hole....

   If you pack that way often enough it works, but Ive been 30 and 60 miles away and forgot 10 ga. BB loads for geese.
I rounded up about everything I could think of. Maybe just maybe Ive forgotten something. Or I'll discover something I need.

Last year I spent 50 days in the elk woods of Idaho and Montana and 20 days chasing snow geese in Mn. In Idaho, I came home for laundry, check on the dog and my wife, , and fulfill church obligations, take a long hot shower., stock up on foods
A home away from home.

I try to keep my hunting gear together.

Today a few food staples and some canned items are headed into the camper.
Checking/charging the batteries for my CPAP.
Ive rounded up most of our short-day hiking snacks for camp too.

Im not sure how I'll manage my kill kit, meat processing boxes. I have an old Kelty pack that the frame is just too long to fit in the meat box, mabe Ill cut that down the fram

I’ve gotten better about the early packing the last few years but I’m still always running the day before.

My wife shot her bow a bunch this weekend. Her deer hunt starts in three days. We should get out for a little bit this weekend.

Tonight we will shoot bows again. I’m going to do all I can to get my pack ready. The rest of the trail cameras ready. And as much organizing and putting stuff together as I can.

New broadheads came in the mail today. My wife’s mule deer hunt starts at daylight tomorrow. I have to work tomorrow morning but then we are going to head out for an afternoon hunt. Probably stay the night and hunt Friday also. Then we will come home for stuff we have planned.

Can not believe that 2 weeks from tomorrow I will be setting up elk camp for another season

Trying to shoot my bow a few more times each day!

Set up Julie and Andrews's camp yesterday. Placed a trail cam on a waterhole a ways back in.
A little after noon and we had an inch of sleet/hail and the temp dropped to 48 degrees!

Did a 2.3 mi hike in the hills, cut down a bunch of trees, and shot my bow over the weekend. Today I rode my bike with my elk hunting buddy and I just couldn't keep up with him. I just plain struggled. Then I noticed my back tire seemed a little low. Got home and it was at 9 psi. Check your tire pressure folks. When I think about gas mileage, this really hit home. I cannot believe how hard it was to pedal. On the positive side, if I ever ride bike with Swede, I know what I am going to do to his tire pressure before we start!

Thanks Joe,,, Ill wait till my wife is gone

We took Bud up for a hike and to set and check trail cams.
We had 3 different bulls a 6, 5 and spike, easily a dozen cows and calves—two litters of red foxes, coyotes, moo cows lots of action.
And the 6x was traveling in the daytime.

40 days, and not a pic at the one site of my blonde bear

Shot my bow tonight and watched a couple of elk clips from elk101

Packed up a little bit of stuff and am a bit closer to taking off!!!

Set the mouse poison around where camp will be.

Found out that the cows will not be in the pastures, :D :D :D ,. My guess enforcement finally happened. Only pics of lots of cows small raghorns and spikes

I'm taking up the RV toy hauler today completely setting up camp.

I'd filled my hydration bladder I let it sit on the counter overnight to dry before putting in my pack.

The bladder has a leak..
My wife was claiming it's because I don't take care of things as well as I could.
The bladder 5 years old has been in my truck no less than a thousand days,
And in the field in my pack no less than 200 days.

Time for a new bladder

Just barely started to get things organized to pack. Wont pack until a couple days before we leave.

My Doc took my stitches out yesterday morning and told me I should go hunting.
She also told me that I would have problems drawing my bow with cracked ribs.
Last night I tried to draw on a grouse.
I can't draw my bow.

Ruh roh. That's not good Lefty. Guess you're going to be focusing on putting your daughter and son in law on elk for a week or so.
I hunt therefore I am. I fish therefore I lie.

Well heres the Scooby: Doesn't look like Julie will be hunting much: she works for an upland game reserve. The boss likes the way she works, she has to cover for him for the next few months.. I gave Julie a hard time. July he was in Africa, August he had a week hunt in Canada.
But now is when he brings in the money.

Poor Andrew tore some ligaments in his arm 4th of July, So he was afraid to draw his bow too, however, he had a buddy retune the bow to 45 lb. And he shot and missed a couple of grouse. Then complained about his arm burning.

My doc encouraged me to shoot ( her dad was an outfitter in Idaho) . She told me to turn my bow down and if I couldn't shoot in a week,,, he diagnosis : broken ribs . And if I could draw without cussing in two weeks my ribs were just cracked :)

I turned my bow down, three full rotations on the set screws. I drew and held for about 5 seconds. I didnt change my sites any. I am setting up a blind 2o yards from the trail. And just hunt that fixed distance.

I came home, this heat, and Im whining: ,,, and my shoulder make me whine. I'll go back up on Tuesday Julie will be up for one day. The plan is to go after a bull I find ;)

I good at finding elk,,, and its a whole lot easier than hunting
