Shooting Practice

Postby Swede » 05 19, 2024 •  [Post 1]

We all have different ways of preparing for our elk hunts. I like to get out in the summer to scout and decide on some potential tree-stand locations. I exercise year-round and draw my bow back 10 time in fairly rapid succession. But what about shooting practice twice a week year-round. I plan to start shooting next month and will shoot about 20 shots per day about three times per week. In the past I would shoot a lot more. I would start in early spring and shoot 50 times every other day. I do not do that much anymore, but still find I want to be in hitting well when elk season comes around.
So, what are some of you other hunters shooting plans?

June July and august are when I shoot the most…some days only 5-10 shots and some days 50 or so…last year I knew what stand I was planning on sitting most of the season and the longest shot was about 30 and most shots were right at 20…I tried to focus more on form out of a stand then anything else last summer…this year will probably be more of the same

start in June, more in July, most in August, serious in Sept, then one more arrow in mid-September. Although that one isn't practice....

When I archery hunted, I shot year around, but certainly focused the most in summer when the weather was nice and I had light to shoot early and late in the day.

I know this is really in regards to you guys flinging sticks about, but I have what I feel is a pretty dang good rifle shooting practice program. I usually start about now, and continue through the summer. Once I confirm my rifle's zero, I start my routines.
- I shoot prone off my bipod and off my pack. I find uncomfortable positions that are realistic to where I hunt to shoot from.
- I shoot off my shooting sticks and other elevated rests like stumps, logs, rocks, etc... The last couple of years I've been practicing using my pack/trekking poles/shooting sticks in conjunction with one another to give me a front and rear rest. If I can put my back against something, that is as solid of a rest as a guy can get in the field.
- I do shooting scenarios. Someone sets the target out in the clear cut at an unknown range (we've shot here forever though so once we see it we know how far it is). Once the target is acquired, we have 15 seconds to setup for and take the shot. You can choose to setup however you want, prone, pack, log, sticks, freehand, etc...
- To double down on this scenario, there is a 2nd and a 3rd target setup out there. After your first shot, you need to reload and acquire those targets for a follow up shot. This has been great practice.

I find all of this to be so much more beneficial to pounding away on paper at the range. That only does so much for you.
I hunt therefore I am. I fish therefore I lie.

I don’t shoot nearly as much as I used to. Now I get my bow out sometime in July and shoot for an hour or so once a week up till hunting season.
