2020 Meatpole

Postby Trumkin the Dwarf » 01 26, 2020 •  [Post 1]

Also, first!!!

This is the place to share your pictures (and brief story if you wish) of your 2020 Big (or small) Game harvests. Whether they're taken with bow, rifle, muzzle loader, shotgun, hand cannon, spear, or the Five Point Exploding Heart Technique, let's see your 2020 harvests!

The previous year meat poles are all located in the Archived Tips section if you wish to view them.

My pic
One of those gotta brag moments my thing on geese the past 10 years is to set up the shot to kill clean multiples on birds
As the birds approached I could see a pair lining up to shoot two birds with one shot
I dropped 3 then swung way wide for the forth bird

Now I’m not always great , you know the dog and his bone that was me last week; 30 geese coming right over the top at 18-23 yards
I was focused on the three I was going to drop
Plenty to of humble pie, that only the dog witnessed
Fired, swung to the next bird, fired , swung to the next fired again miss miss miss
I shot in front of each bird great way to end the season
I’ve been thinking of going Tim Wells on rabbits and squirrels ( blow gun) One of my lifetime goals is a goose with archery sling shot and blowgun
The whole spear thing I find intriguing too but I’ve gotten smarter in my older and wisdemic age in life Ok it plain hurts to be in a tree tree

Man I miss honkers in the snow. It's the greatest sound to hear them thump against the ground when you fold them 40 yards up.

Even more exciting when they land just crash feet away.
The same week one bird was passing 10 yards up , 15 yards out,.. Just a rocke; hit the snow hard and fast and blew open its breast

Idaho has a cheap small game,.. come on up the last week of the season next year I might even turn the heater on
But the wack of an arrow is much more satisfying 8-)

That's awful tempting! I'm told the waterfowling here in TX is some of the best, but I haven't put any time (read gas money) into figuring it out yet.

Just started watching Meat Eater and he ate squirrel and coyote (and lots of other unmentionables!). Funny how some meats get labeled by society non edible- like cows in India for example.

Very nice! Do I sense a toilet seat cover or perhaps a pillow cover in your future?

Actually, I kinda think a bear is a bear and each is a trophy regardless of size. If it has antlers, sure, you can measure it. But a small bear is just as impressive to me as a big bear. Plus, that one has a very nice color.

The kicker is, she also had a chest blaze. Ive never gotten a bear with a blaze, and always been very envious when i see pics of color phase bears with blazes. I finally got one, but its too small to do a proper mount with, so ill keep killing bears and eventually one will be a big brown boar with a white chest patch. Someday.

Ishy'/Bryan's 2020 archery bear and his daughter Brooke's first bear (muzzleloader). Write-ups are over in the Other Big Game forum; swing over and read about the hunts!

Great job father and daughter on a couple of nice Idaho bears ;).

really, i have a lot of treestand and tcam stuff to do. But most importantly, the spot i killed the bear today is requiring my attention. Never set foot there until 2 nights ago. Had crazy wind yesterday and the night before, barely scratched the surface of this area, but man its glorious. Best bear country ive ever seen, and looks primo for everything else too, qnd im sure its prime ground for moose and muley sheds. Got a ton of exploring to do, and ill probably spackle the area with cameras. Ive never been so optimistic about a new piece of ground ive looked at.

I got this bull a few days ago, had a hard time eating it all, so I am guarding it and covered the hindquarters with dirt.

My Cousin is working in Yellowstone for 6 weeks now and saw this a couple days ago. She took a bunch of pictures and sent them to me. The griz made the kill late one afternoon and the next morning he was still there. It was in Hayden valley of the park.

We called this guy in and I had to watch him for 10+ minutes inside 40 yards. He absolutely destroyed an alder bush 12 yards in front of me while I was at full draw. Finally got a small window at 34 yards. Forgot the kitten, puppy, and 3rd grader though!

Postby slim9300 » 09 24, 2020 •  [Post 63]

My write up cut and pasted: I was 14 years old when my pops took me bowhunting for Roosevelt elk for the first time in my home state of Washington. It was late-season (December), which means being soaked and cold, and the elk were a little twitchy like they always are after rifle season. After countless opportunities, I finally capitalized and took my first elk with a bow at 25 yards. I still vividly remember standing in the pouring rain in the middle of that creek with water up to my knees, and being soaking wet and shivering while my dad helped me break down the elk. There was no moving it from the water and I could care less, I was on cloud 9. From that point forward, I have dreamed about killing a mature true Roosevelt bull with my bow, yet that goal has always eluded me... Until 2020 of all the years. [emoji3526]

Opening day was pretty incredible. While walking in, in the dark to get to a new spot by first light, we jumped what I figured was a bull. The elk was alone and its hide was light in color, but we didn’t see antlers in our headlamps. Since the elk didn’t get our wind, we decided to setup and try to call him back in once we could see. After 20 minutes of calling using Elknut’s slow play sequence, the bull carefully picked his way back into the open and Scott made the opportunity count. Filling an elk tag a few minutes into opening morning is a surreal experience and was a first for us.

Fast forward to the evening of day two... Scott and I walked back into an old alder-choked grade, running back into a nice cool creek bottom. The elk love to frequent this flat because they have a ton of feed available to them along with water and shade. This is the same place that last season I had a dark horned 5-point at 15 yards without a clear shot. Every time we walk into this old road we are amazed at the amount of hooking that we find. There are dozens of 10-12” diameter alders torn up over the span of about a 1/2 mile, with many of them reaching up above 8’.

When we reached the point we wanted to locate, we started with two soft cow calls towards where were the elk were likely bedded just in case they were close, and 15 seconds later I sent a short scream with chuckles aimed back over my shoulder. A bull instantly lost his mind to the bugle and roared like a dragon back at us. It was one of the most aggressive and raspy bugles we have ever heard, and the kind of sound an elk hunter dreams about. The game was on and my heart was pounding in my chest. We took off in his direction through the 30 year old reprod mixed with alders and thick underbrush, and very quickly cut the distance in half. We were not being concerned about our noise since we wanted the bull to hear us coming. Keep in mind this place is very thick and visibility is 20 yards or less (see the video).

With the bull now inside of 80 yards, he had already started coming our way. When he held up around 60, I was praying the wind would hold and that he would move to his left (the wind in western WA loves to change on a dime and even moving 100 yards can mean a totally different wind direction in the creek bottoms). If he moved to his right even a little, it was game over. And thankfully if he wanted to cut our wind, he would have to walk through some terrible piles of pre-commercial thinning from about a decade before. I am pretty sure that is what saved us. As he was holding at 60 yards, I signaled to Scott to repeat the sequence that started out the encounter to bring the bull to his left. As the chuckles left the tube, the bull was surging forward.

When he stopped again at 30 yards behind a tree and ripped off an angry bugle, I signaled to Scott to cut him off. That was the final straw. When he stepped into the tiniest of openings at about 20 yards all I could see was his head and right front shoulder (in front of the crease). He was staring daggers at the decoy Scott was holding 15 yards behind me. His antlers looked black and very difficult to see, but I could tell he was heavy and old. Since I was already at full draw and I felt confident that I could thread the needle (even if I prefer shooting them a bit further back), I put an arrow right into his front shoulder. The bull trotted 20 yards and amazingly went down stone dead in less than 10 seconds. The arrow was perfect. It totally severed the top of the heart arteries and punched through both lungs. A hunter couldn’t ask for a more humane death.

As we walked up on the bull I realized that I had finally accomplished a goal that I had been working to achieve for 20 years. I had taken a truly mature Roosevelt bull with my bow. We figure him to be about 7 years old and last year his antlers were nearly identical in size. I bet he only grew 5” since last season. Roosevelt antlers are small in comparison to all of the Rocky Mountain bulls I have chased over the years, but there is just something special about calling these elk. They are so aggressive and fearless when you hunt them in the thick stuff, and man are they are giant bodied. Just the meat and antlers weighed in at over 320# pounds back at the truck, and this was the first elk in over a decade that Scott and I didn’t pack out in halves. Maybe we are getting old, but I’ll call it is getting smarter. [emoji2373]

Our 2020 Washington elk season was over far too quickly, but at the same time, I am thankful for our success. We will be headed out this weekend to do some learning from the elk, and hopefully locate another stud or two for next season.

We leave for Montana early October. We will see what we can accomplish there! Can’t wait.

Congrats to all so far.

This is my hunting partner's bull from AZ. We hunted hard all season trying a variety of things. Elk did not respond to calls and were fairly quiet in general.

We were doing a lot of treestand sitting, especially afternoons. This bull came in to a water hole my partner had his treestand on. My partner was able to make a good 30 yd. shot and the bull went about 100 yds. and expired.

Although I was unsuccessful this year, I had some close encounters and was happy for my partner. I had been following this bull all summer and one of us finally got an opportunity to take him.

Congrats to all. Managed to fill my late September Bull elk tag in northern AB. Fairly pressured area around 5 guys in a 10 square mile area. Had to pioneer a 1km trail up a river valley to reach the herd's bedding area (close to private land which means food, and water in the creek bottoms). Found sign in there tried a few cow calls and a location bugle for 5 mornings with no success. On the 6th day at sunrise I decided to go dead silent ambush approach. At 9:30am decided they must be bedded and heard leaf movement in the distance. I sat for over an hour to get the proper wind setup then crept in to about 30 yards away of where I could hear the odd twig breaking. Turns out they were bedded in the only Spruce thick regen patch in the area. No visibility on elk only could hear the odd twig breaking..sat for another hour looking for some sort of window. At around 11am a cow stood up at about 10 yards away and spooked off quietly due to a squirrel peeping away at me. I thought my luck had run out but then more footsteps...then yellow fur walking towards me on their game trail..yes it's the herd bull..stopped him at 10 yards with a nervous bark with a 6 inch window to shoot through. Took the risky shot and found no blood for over an hour...on my last pass of the area there he was laying down with a perfect lung shot no blood on the ground whatsoever. Moving on to whitetail hunts in the next few weeks!

The year is far from over, but I did strike out on spring bear... probably saw 20-25 bear, 2 for sure I would have shot but didn’t get a chance, several for sure not bear I would shoot, and probably too many I should have shot but couldn’t decide if I wanted to shoot... bear are hard to judge unless they are really big or small... with COVID, I didn’t really want to give up my tag either, it was the only thing to do, haha.... really good bear season, just didn’t kill one. So far I killed this bull on the first Friday of the season, bugled him into 7-8yds and he was dead in a few seconds and 25-30yds. He had an arrow in the neck, that’s why he’s goofy horned, he was a 4x spike last year, so the injury is at least 3 years old [img][img][/img][/img]

haha.... i'm terrible with bear.... i'm not a trophy hunter.... unless i'm bear hunting :D with bear, i try to only shoot bear i'm confident are 300+lbs.... mainly i love spring bear hunting, and if i shoot one i'm done.... i'm good at talking myself out of shooting.

i did want one to eat, then i found a big red bear with about a week left in the season (came around a corner of a logging road one rainy afternoon, it was feeding down the side, about 40yds and it did not register, i thought it was a cow elk and i took a couple extra steps... it looked up at me, and i had that "oh crap!" feeling come over me... at the point in the season i was going to adjust my standards, i decided that bear or no bear.... turned into no bear.

best spring i have had action-wise, just didn't want it to end this year.... almost got a shot at a lion too, glassed one up sneaking up a timber edge, it was just too fast for the distance it was.

that they do! i'm pretty sure they do that on purpose.... the big ones hang out on the steepest slope around, so when you shoot them they roll all the way down with their floppy body and crash in the brush choked bottom that's so thick you saw exactly where it went but it still takes you 40 minutes to find it once you're there.... haha.... you make a solid argument

i did get off easy once though, really big spring bear, last light of the last night my first spring season... i had a ruger 270 i bought earlier that year, and it was a terrible rifle, after a couple shots the barrel would get warm and after a few 3 shot groups you couldn't even stay on paper at 100yds.... it wasn't me, my buddy i worked with for years who was an army ranger and very good shot had the same exact results.... shooting prone with a solid rest.... that gun sucked! little did i know, that was going to lead to one of my coolest shot opportunities.

i spotted him late in the evening around 400yds walking the timber edge, and i bailed to close the distance, in doing so i lost my elevation and now was at his level and couldn't see into the cut... i kept sneaking and listening, with no sign of the bear, then directly above me a loud snap, and the little christmas tree size firs in the grown up clear cut start parting coming directly at me!... i turn my scope to low power and wait, that huge thing appeared right in front of me 10 or 12 yds, then turns perfectly broadside and starts grazing.... i hold behind the shoulder and shoot, and he bolts right towards me at the shot... i'm trying to work the bolt and he goes running full speed right by me and keeps going! he made it into the draw 30 or 40yds below me and starts moaning.... holy smokes! that would have never happened with an accurate rifle, i would have just kept my elevation and shot him from there at about 200 yds, haha.

a buddy and i were able to get to him the next morning with a game cart, he died on a grass skid road, and we wheeled him out of the cut to the road, then it was steep downhill on gravel about 2 miles to my rig.... best case for a big bear!

So far I killed this bull on the first Friday of the season, bugled him into 7-8yds and he was dead in a few seconds and 25-30yds. He had an arrow in the neck, that’s why he’s goofy horned, he was a 4x spike last year, so the injury is at least 3 years old [img][img][/img][/img]

we went 0 for 5 but had 3 very good opportunities that just didnt come to fruition.

the highlight of my trip was confidently dropping off my 16 year old son for his own solo hunt in the wilderness on the last day of the trip. it felt later like he was moving out of the house and being an adult of sorts. Truly a special moment in his elk/adult life for both of us.

Here is my son's first ever muley! As you can see, pretty bad weather. He hung in there without complaining one bit. He hauled out half of the quartered deer in a cheap backpack with no load lifters or belt, uphill, for over a mile!

My wife is on the board!

Finally got a morning off, and my wife, buddy I work with and myself went looking for a buck... sign is finally starting to pick up, and I was excited about the day.

We walked in while it was dark, and at gray light started glassing the first big cut, after the initial vantage we worked further up, I decided to walk over to the clay bank to look for tracks, and sure enough, there is a doe track and a skidded buck track behind, we were almost to our next glassing vantage and the track vanished left, so I said we better go glass the backside really quick... we snuck up to the edge and quickly my wife said she sees one, and it’s a buck!

I have her talk me into it. My buddy sees it then I finally do, he’s bedded at the base of a rotten stump like they often are. The knee high grass makes it where we cannot shoot there, so my wife and I belly crawl up to the edge slowly, I drop the bipod legs on her rifle, turn the power up to 4 (enough but not too much for the scenario) and I get behind the gun real quick just to feel it out... plenty stable, so I have her slide in front of me, and trade places.

She gets behind the gun, takes her time, and the shot breaks. The buck jumps up and goes towards the top of the finger ridge, right at the top (maybe 20yds) he starts staggering, his whole off side is blood soaked, he crested the ridge and we see a tree shake hard, knowing it was him crashing! He didn’t go far, she put a great shot on him and took out all of the goodies and avoided the meat... best case! The buck went 25-30yds and it was a short blood trail but the bloodiest blood trail I have seen with a rifle, it was crazy.

Great morning, and I put him in my pack and it’s all done now... headed back out in a bit, and hunting with my buddy again tomorrow to get him one hopefully. Fun day, and my wife did great, proud of her

Congrats to the successful deer hunters. There are a couple of fine looking, and I am sure excellent eating forked horns.
I saw a nice forked horn on some private property on Saturday. I could not shoot it, but it was fun to see.

Here is my other son's first ever antelope! Same day, nasty weather. Had to belly crawl about 30 yards in the snow and mud, then he made a 309 yard shot! He scored just over that 70" mark.

Here is Hunter with his first antelope. Lots of action on this one. We got into a herd and snuck into position. We had antelope running around everywhere. They had no clue we were there, but we had 8 bucks running around with about 15 does. I repositioned him about 3 times, called him off a couple of smaller bucks and then this guy came up out of a steep cut. Shot was 204 yards with a .243. He also scored just over the 70" mark.

This one was Wyatt's first ever mule deer. We were glassing and he found him. We did a big loop to get into a cut and popped out 256 yards from this guy. He kept walking behind bushes and it took probably 10-15 minutes behind the gun before he offered a shot. One shot and he did a bangflop.

Uh, well, yeah about that. That is starting to be a problem. Your count is right on. Whitetail season is right around the corner and my kids are breathing fire to shoot some. I split the elk with my hunting buddies, so I don't have a lot of elk meat. Last night I packaged 6 backstraps. I have one freezer and a couple of frig freezers. Man, it is a great problem to have!

Well it was opening deer hunting this last weekend in MN. With only a bull elk, 2 mule deer bucks, and 2 antelope bucks, we are in grave danger of running out of meat soon, so off we went. After the dust settled, my kids did pretty well.

Thanks! I have one more addition to the body count. My cousins popped a couple cows with Grandpa. I'm calling this composition "Ye Olde Meatpole"

Well after destroying my truck i decided for several reasons it was best if i just skipped my washington deer season this year and focused on lion hunting. I got plenty of bear meat anyway, id survive. But i took today off from lion hunting to deal with a bunch of crap. Stepped out on my porch mid day and heard a bunch of grunting. Hmm. Came inside and opened the living room window, got my bow out just incase.. Shortly thereafter this rutdumb buck stepped out to the edge of my lawn. Thought about it for a second and decided to send him to freezer camp. It would be dumb to go a year without venison when a buck is damn near jumping on your arrow. Cant call it hunting, but its meat on the meat pole, and im grateful for the easy meat. Got him skinned and hanging in the old mans shop now. Back to lion calling tomorrow. Interesting note, my shot placement was less than ideal, high and forward, but the arrow hit him and he dropped instantly, not one step taken. Never seen that happen with a bow kill, surprised the hell out of me. Ive bon jovi'd several deer with a .308 only to have them run 50 yards or so with their heart a pile of pudding. Double lunged one with a .300wm sst that left an exit would you could drop a golf ball in and he made it maybe 75 yards. Now i hit a deer in the shoulder with an arrow and he drops instantly. Crazy.

Nice buck! And in my opinion, on a broadside shot with a bow, it's not too far forward till it hits heavy bone. Getting it tight in that > is deadly.

So wait. Did you actually shoot him out the window? I used to shoot starlings with my bow out my window, but never a chance at a buck.

Yeah. I was inside my living room. Like i said, not "hunting" more akin to going out and picking some fruit off the tree. As much as i was disinclined to hunt deer this year, going without deer meat when it was trying to jump in my freezer? Not happenin. Thwack.

My pet doe saw the whole thing go down. 6 years ive spent making friends with her. Hope she forgives me. She hangs out in my yard and begs for treats like a dog. Shes why he came in.

Though the quantity and quality of deer has been rapidly declining here, i could shoot one from my window every year if i wanted. Just dont want to do that in the normal course of things. This year was a little different.

I would think that you wouldn't have to pay property taxes on a deer stand, right?

Ive never once seen a full mount bobcat that looked good. There are very very few taxidermists that can do a good job on a lion. As far as ive seen there are zero that can make a bobcat mount look right. Im getting a rug done.

That’s a fair point. At least you are doing a rug. My old taxi was amazing with cats. I looked at a few of his in person and they looked amazing to me. He is no longer doing taxidermy so that could be a problem.
