Quartering to me

I read a discussion on another site about quartering to shots. The author said this is a very common shot for him because he hunts solo and the elk are coming into his calls. He shoots inside the shoulder joint close to the neck(red dot) This is not the best pic but you get the idea. I have seen post about frontal shots and quarter to shots but never one that shot inside the shoulder joint(under the shoulder blade close to the neck.) Anyone have experience with this?

"Not gonna do it, wouldn't be prudent." On top of all the arguments here against frontals, this shot is sharply uphill. Think in 3D to imagine an exit wound, which would be out the ribs to the hunter's right of the spine. So no blood trail, might collapse one lung, will miss above heart and aortae.

I'd shoot center mass right where the neck joins the chest and do it every chance I got.

Your red dot is to high in my opinion here... I am a huge advocate of this shot. Unlike Elkduds I will take this shot and I welcome others to take it. Does it have it's pit falls and such? Sure... So does the broadside shot... The thing to learn about this shot is the anatomy of the animal. The red dot you have on your picture is to high. Bring that dot down about 8 inches to the top of the brisket and your good.

Under 25ish yards? Whammo into the yellow X; short tracking job; dead elk! I agree that that red dot is quite high may yield undesireable results.

So if he is close... inside 25yrds and more flat ground the red dot would be OK?

IMO, the red dot is too far towards the left shoulder and too high for that angle (almost fully facing towards me, and, on an uphill slant). Here's an older but very good article by Aron Snyder in OL. I like it because it has pictures

The shot you are showing isn't quartering to you, it is frontal. On a quartering to you shot you still shoot behind the shoulder blade. On the image you show you can't see the shoulder blade. I have killed most of my elk quartering to me. On your image to have quartering to the elk would have to turn to its right.

I'm shooting this one in front of the shoulder if it raises it's head and grows some antlers.

I'm with phantom 16 on this shot I would put it in the same yellow x and be happy I did it is a lethal shot

Phantom is dead nuts with the yellow X, the red is way to high and off to the right. I have killed elk with the frontal that missed the chest cavity,and smashed thru the shoulder bone, but I consider myself very fortunate,even though it messed him up real bad,but would never aim for that spot on purpose.(the leg bone)
As far as the cow.......you are only goint to get the very bottom of one lung where the black is located.Indian is right, as she is relaxed,i'd wait for a better angle, but if I had to shoot at the pic,after changing my mind,it would also have to be in front of the shoulder,but is really close to the neck,and the knuckle bone,I would feel more comfortable on the bull than this cow,and would wait.

This shot may only get one lung but it gets both diaphragms so the lungs collapse. The liver shot is a killer by itself but in the elk I have killed with this shot I got arteries and veins that bleed an elk dry.
I trust it more than a frontal.
