Rock Climbing Harness in a treestand

Postby husky390 » 12 29, 2015 •  [Post 1]

Is anyone using a rock climbing harness in their treestand? I'm considering trying it out this weekend as I'm not a fan of the full body harnesses. My kit consists of harness, carabiner, fall arrest lanyard and HSS Tree Strap.

This may seem controversial to some but I'd like to hear pro's and con's of both systems.

I know nothing about rock climbing equipment. I would think it could be safe enough, but will it allow you to shoot your bow without interference?

That's a good point and I should be able to as the tether will hang down in front of me. I'll mainly be rifle hunting this trip though.

Husky, you really want the tether in back. It should have very little slack in it when you are seated. Try it preseason, but I think you will find the tether in front is a pain with a rifle, and an even bigger problem with a bow.

Rock Climbing Harness in a treestand

It's a moot point. Apparently rock climbing gear is built for people who do not suffer from "linebacker ass". I do see some merits of it but a full size harness is better for bulky warm clothes. The climbing harness would be better suited for early season weather.

So, I'll stick with the damn regular harness.

Know that I'm late, but a rock climbing harness is all I use for 30-40 tree stand sits for whitetails each fall. I'll never go back to a full body harness. Happy to answer any questions about my setup. Archerytalk has more threads on harnesses than you can count as well.

I have thought about doing this as well, I am just curious about how it affect a person if they actually fall. I don't think you'd stay upright and end upside down. Most folks I know aren't strong enough to pull themselves up either.

Just a thought. Curious what others think.
