Over the years I have found some stands and some areas are consistently better in the morning and some are better in the evening. All of my stands are along trails. Some seem to be on travel routes to a bedding area and some to feed and water. It makes a difference when you should expect to see the critters.
The location where my son got his elk last season is where I have shot elk. It seems to be a morning spot. Where his friend sat seems to be a consistent afternoon location. If you are going to maximize your potential to get an elk, it seems you would do best to have two stands, and know enough about them to be there when the elk are most likely to show up. This is a general observation and not an absolute. Elk can buck any trend and show up at any time.
