Swede. I just couldn't do it

Postby Lefty » 09 28, 2024 •  [Post 1]

Today was one of the few days that I hiked in a short distance by myself.
I had decided that I would now shoot a cow or a calf since I only had today and Monday to hunt.
Sending out a single cow mew every 5 minutes,
The fifth mew a cow and a calf strolled in.

I started ranging them at 72 yd and tried to take some pictures, as they slowly feed towards me, now the common calf right 55 yd then 42 yd then 40 yd s then 35 and 33.

I range the calf at 32 yds
I may be only 500 yd and 400 ft elevation to the ATV.
The cow looked really big,
And so did this year's calf.
Would there be 45, 50 lbs for meat on the calf? Only one pack out if I broke down the elk far enough

And what if there's a bull following the cow.?
Naw,
I think I'll see what happens Monday morning.

Kind of as a side note I got back to camp after sunset.
Drove the ATV 3/4 mi the glass see if I could see anything out in the open.
And the ball bugles five times in just minutes.

Those are the situations that come to us and the decisions we have to make. I don't want to take a calf or a cow that has this year's calf still with it. A June calf is only 2-3 months old around the first of September. They are still nursing. I hear people say that a calf can find another cow to nurse. I think they say that out of total ignorance or to soothe their conscience. Keep on hunting. There is still the rifle season.
