The sled full of Yesterday's spring snow goose conservation hunt.
As of today we've cleaned 80 snow geese, Ross and blues.

Last night temperature was in the teens.
So much easier handing meat.

Being as how this is a virtual meat pole, does the animal have to be dead, or is "catch and release" acceptable?

Different cat. It was already collared. I was fortunate enough to tag along on a tree / tranq / recollar mission. Pretty awesome experience getting my hands on one that was still alive, then watching it run off after.

Way cool Whitey! That is a once in a lifetime experience.

Unfortunately, you have earned 2 WaptitTalk demerits for posting a live animal on the Meat Pole thread. For this transgression, you have to clean the corporate jet for 2 weeks. Ewwww. Lefty used it last..... :o

Speaking of chipmunks, funny stuff today. So unfortunately the female end of my waist band strap buckle disappeared somewhere between my truck and where i park my quad 6 miles later. About noon decided to go look for it. Couldnt find it. Decided to go home where i knew i had a spare. After closing the tailgate / ramp of my atv trailer i found out a chipmunk had taken up residence in one of the hollow steel pipes. Couldnt coax or scare him out, so i figured he would go home with me. About 3 or 4 miles down the road i look in my side mirror and see himdoing the spiderman, so i pull over and finally managed to get him gone. Timber tigers crack me up. Sure are funny little buggers.

I find that I often enjoy watching the little critters during my time in the woods as much or than I do big critters. Squirrels I can take or leave but chipmunks, birds, rabbits, weasels, etc.. I enjoy watching

I hate squirrels with a passion. Obnoxious little $#@×##$

God invented the .22wmr to deal with squirrels

Chipmunks are cool though. Theyre fun to watch and easy to make friends with. A couple crunchy granola bars is all you need to be best buds with every chipmunk near your camp.

Taking a little breather on a hot ugly packout: editing my text as i see it kind of gives the impression those pics were taken during my break. No sir. Couldnt pack that bear out whole no matter how much ya payed me. She was in pieces on my back when i posted that. I mean, im totally badass and all, but even i have my limits

Different bear than the one this morning im sure. Walked out a deadend atv trail this morning and the first bear crossed it and headed straight up hill to the top of the mountain. The bear i killed was about a mile further west, past the dead end, and downhill of the trail. So the always enjoyable uphill packout in 100 degree heat, gotta love it. But i just knew if i snuck down to that shady water hole id find a bear somewhere nearby. And i did. Still hunting down there resulted in a 20ish yard shot just a hundred or so yards west of the water source. It really pays moving as slow and quiet as possible through the timber in good bear habitat

Well good work. I don't have that kind of bear habitat around me so I don't get to hunt that way. I either have to climb into alpine meadows, watch lowland clearcuts, or go to fancy hotels along the river.

That was a poor decision on his part. I saw a coyote out my front window the other day as well. I don't think my neighbors would respond as well to a rifle blast as yours do though.

"They" (i really only have one neighbor) respond quite positively to a gun shot. I was pretty sure she was out working in her yard to the east of me, and shot with a suppressed .223 from my west window, so i emailed her, curious if she noticed. Heres how my neighbor feels about it.

Good neighbors. In reality many of my neighbors would probably be fine with it. They'd bat an eye for sure but be ok. Suppressed would help a lot. Full blast 7mm mag is pretty surprising.

The black part of the photo above is the abyss. This guy died in a terrible place to butcher. There was a steep drop off to the right of the pic it was steep above and there were no trees in the area. Fortunately, it was not a bad pack out. I did that by myself in a couple of hours. My brother who is partially in the pic said the meat from this bull went 230 pounds.
BTW: Tig., thanks for all of those pointers you shared. Maybe someday you can give me some onsite butchering and packing tips.

Another big thanks to all who have shared their experiences and knowledge of these amazing beasts. Beasts they are when one man has around an hour to get them quartered , cleaned, bagged, and at least back close to the trail before dark. 2 years ago same area had wolves follow me back to camp after cleaning a bull (they make some spooky sounds) in the dark.Again thanks to all. 90+% of the way I hunt is from what I have learned here and the “elk nut” and have had amazing results. Early this same morning was 30 yards from a big 6 point and a heard bull with 4 cows . Could see head neck and horns but no shots. North Idaho at its finest

One man has an hour to quarter and bag an elk. If you can skin, take one apart and bag any mature elk in one hour, you can give me instructions. Better yet, come around and show me how you do it. Just get all the meat and keep it clean and hair free.

amen to that! I guess I could quarter an elk in an hour if I was using a sawsall, but it'd be a mess!

In my experience it's a size thing. Try taking a screenshot of the resized photo and post that.

This guy winded me and decided to pull a tactical evasive maneuver. I barked to stop him and he wasnt having it. Had to take a standing offhand 140yrd shot at a running yote with the 243. The exit wound was quite spectacular, so i kicked a little snow over the gory part for the sake of keeping the meat pole relatively civilized.

Cow elk wasn't from 2022, was 2021 but I will share as that was my first elk after blowing my golden opportunity on a nice archery bull in 2017. The meat has lasted past 2022

Definitely a nice cow Midwest. I get a turkey every year too, but mine come ready for stuffing and popping into the broiler. :D
