I have one "discrepancy". It's on the fist or second question about how any inches of antler an elk can grow per day. I chose 2" and I'm incorrect. So you're telling me the correct answer would be that it takes a 360" bull elk 360 days to grow that antler??? We must be talking length of main beams not "Inches of antler".

I've always read an inch to an inch and a half from 90 to 120 days. Im not sure but I always assumed that was each side per day.

I have to agree as the bulls are done growing by August and the velvet starts to dry and they start rubbing. The big bulls eat all the velvet as well as chase smaller bulls eat there's !! So if a bull sheds his horns in Feb-March that only leaves between 4-6 months of growing or 120-180 days of growing. So with these numbers roughed out a 300 inch average bull would take 5 months or 150 days growing at 2 inches per day. But also feed and quality feed is needed.

What are your guys thoughts ?

I believe you guys are looking at the growing process too literal? When the answer is aprox 1" a day this means per tine! Antlers start as nubs then can quickly turn into knobby forks, 3's, 4's, 5's, 6's. As they do this each tine can grow an inch a day, once it's a 5 point or 6 point doesn't mean you count 10" or 12"a day it's still an inch a day per tine, this can only stand to reason. If a bull has a 44" or 60" main-beam this means he can grow it's entire rack in a couple of months an inch a day for all tines. Rory, is this your understanding?

I missed the last one... I rarely, if ever, see calves nursing in November so I was figuring 4-5 months " on the tete" but that's purely from observational evidence .... Need to brush up on my book learnin' :)

As far as the antler growth rate, here is what I recollect ...

There are approximately 150 days of antler production for bulls. Larger bulls shed first to give them more time to grow their new set. Lots of factors affect growth rate including genetics ( most important), age and feed/water conditions but most info I have seen says the average is close to 1/2" per day (1" would be max). How does this equate to score ? It's important to remember that a bull's "score" is based on length of the beam and all points but also factors in measurements for mass and spread, which don't relate to our growth rate estimates. The score also counts both sides of the rack...

So for a single side, the total of the linear measurements would give us a better idea of the growth rate. Lets say one side measured 50", 16,16,9,14,8 ( about a 300" bull). That's 113". Divide by 150 days and you get .753" per day. That's the way I understood it but I could be wrong...

Elknut, Huntrgathr, thanks for that clarification. That is my interpretation of antler growth also; "up to" an inch per day. Pretty phenomenal that the velvet on a bull's antlers can weigh up to 10 pounds also. Dang it, should have saved that for the next quiz :D

Working on another quiz already, glad you enjoyed it ;) As far as best book available, many will say North American Elk: Ecology and Management by Dale E. Toweill (Compiler), Daniel P. Metz (Editor), Jack Ward Thomas (Editor), and Jack Ward Thomas (Editor). This was recommended to me by GSElkhunter a while back. More elk info than I can retain, lol. Don't buy it new; they can be found pre-owned if you search for $30-$40. I think they're asking $125 and up for new.
