Cold/Blind Calling with Cow Calls - Vid

Postby cnelk » 05 10, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Since I am the 'Basic Tacics Consultant' :) ...

Here a basic tactic for using cow calls in a Blind/Cold calling setup
A couple of years ago, a buddy of mine wanted to film my son and I to see how we set up and call using open reed calls

This was completely ad lib, just behind camp.

I have called in dozens of elk using this method.
I hope it is helpful for anyone, newbies or veterans, out there

That tactic is used by my team. Although basic, it should be in every teams/crews bag of tricks.

I dont separate out to 100yds when cold calling.
~60yds is about max. That way nothing can come in between the 2 guys and not be seen.
And when cold calling, you never know how close the elk could be

Lets say you have shooting lanes out to about 40yds to your right, Your buddy is on left out 60yds and he has shooting lanes out to about 40yds to his left. You cant quite see him, but you know his location.
You are now covering ~140yds if anything slips in quiet

Brad, nice visual aid there! How long will you generally stay in the one spot? How far in general will you move to a new location & are you looking for fresh sign that helps depict a good calling setup? If you have elk bugle you from a distance do you pickup & head their way? Just some questions some others may be thinking about! Thanks.

Hey Brad! I will spend as long as an hour in one spot. How about you? Also, I do this alone. It gets to be fun directing traffic sometimes. It's a great way to see how good you are at casting your calls.

As its named 'cold calling', we stay about 20-30 min. not knowing what could be in area.
If a bull answers our calling, we are on it! Pick up and get on him!
But the areas I hunt sometimes hold as many hunters as bull elk, so bugling is limited.
Cow calling sessions are fun as we never know what is going to come in quiet.

Since I have hunted the area for many years, we run and gun several 'circuits' each day.
Knowing the elk patterns and terrain we moved anywhere form 1/4 mile to 1/2 mile between sets.

One thing we always do, everyday, we make a plan. The only thing that alters the plan is hearing/seeing elk.
