Curious of score

Postby tikka » 06 22, 2017 •  [Post 1]

I have a 5X5 elk mounted and have been curious of the score. Doesn't really matter since i am not getting rid of him, and would shoot again if given the chance. What type of pictures would I need to get it scored by the Wapity Talk crew??

If your bull is an average 5X5 it is about 220 B&C or P&Y. Pictures would be helpful if you want a more accurate estimate. 5X5s are good elk and make a great trophy in my opinion, but I would not get hung up on the score. The mount reflects on the experience and brings back memories. I have no idea why you would get rid of your 5X5 unless you have limited space and need to make room for something else.
With no thought or reflection on Tikka here, I suspect too many times the quality of our hunts is measured in P&Y/B&C inches when it should be about the experience.

Why not score it yourself if you are curious.

What ever the score is will not diminish the pride and memories I have for the elk. I just wonder what he would score. I will get picks when I can. Thanks

I love scoring elk and guessing scores. Over the last several years I been able to do a lot of shed hunting and measuring horns and it has helped me a ton on field judging bulls. I think the only time I would ever pass on any mature bull is if I drew on an amazing hunt some time after years of building points. Post a pic and we will give it a guess :) ... I shot a 5 point last year and he was 210... he was a young bull and I think given the chance he would of be a monster, instead he is in my freezer ;)

Front view showing width and detail of brows and both side views should be enough to give you a pretty good guess. Post em up?

Can I move this thread to the Virtual Campfire?

This is a great Campfire discussion. It has little or nothing to do with elk hunting. It is the kind of thing we can discuss with a cup of coffee in hand and a stick to stir the fire.

I see a very good 5X6 bull. I would estimate 275.

He is a 6X6. Both sides are nearly identical. Which tine are you missing?

Will that missing tine make him a 375? I am not sure how you could miss a 100 inch tine...

I was looking at the right side of the bull. Since you say he is a 6X6, I see the one I thought was a stick on the ground. Surely that other tine will get him closer to 400. No doubt. :D

pictures can be deceiving, and guessing antler score or fish weight by pic can end up in a disrespectful sounding guess......I hate judging animal size by pics, i'm not great at guessing in real life, so it only gets worse on pics. :D

I don't mind guessing animals already scored/weighed, because the owner can set me straight, and there is no argument.... unscored/unweighed, I would rather stay out of the guessing game, to avoid sounding disrespectful.

I agree. When I miss even seeing one point, and I am not sure where that missing one is yet, it surely proves your point. I absolutely mean no disrespect, and hope Tigger did not take it that way. He has a fine bull. Period. Tigger asked for our best estimate. That is what I gave him. I looked at the brow tines, thirds, sword points and the general size of what I saw. Certainly the belief that the bull is a 5X6 colored my estimate.
I enjoy the discussions, tips and camaraderie we have here. I hope everyone that drops in is encouraged to stay and participate. I was not insinuating your reply, and I bet tigger knows the score of that bull, I was just mentioning for me, personally, don't like guessing score via pics....if the score is known, all I have at stake is eating crow :D then I will take a guess, I have learned to like the taste of crow, especially good in humble pie.

Tikka, I would GUESS that bull to be in the mid to low 240s. Ill just say 244
Tigger, Ill guess in the 270s. 273

Unfortunately I do not have an official score as I don't live close to any official scorers. Adn it is very heavy(difficult) to bring to one. I will try the meathod Saddlesore suggested.

i know the score, but will wait a wee bit to see if anyone else wants a guess. the guesses so far are a little low.

I am in no way offended. pictures can be misleading. this thread is meant for education I hope. I find it especially neat that we are talking normal sized bulls. for most of us, we wont have to worry about field scoring anything over 300" cuz we will just be busy shooting!

Postby Tigger » 06 30, 2017 •  [Post 27]

He scores right at 250! And yes, I didn't forget to add the spread credit of 30 4/8. Each side is 110" roughly. I sure want him to be bigger, but that is all I can get out of him. He has only 4 4/8 inches of deductions so he is really symmetrical. Where he loses points is up top. His fronts are so good it is misleading. All of his 1sts and 2nds are longer than his 4ths.

As a DIY archery bull, he is definitely a trophy to me regardless of score. Plus his rack is just so pretty that I love looking at it every day. The most important part of this bull is the hunt itself couldn't have been better. It was an amazing hunt and that to me makes for more of a trophy than a number. As I type this, all I have to do is raise my eyes over my monitor and there he is!

Thumbs up for this^!
From your avatar the fronts look like the same length as the top. That width will also "hurt" the score a bit. It is a great looking bull.

If you guys want to try and guess another one, i could post up some pictures. Always interesting to see guesses on pictures.

I always take plenty of pictures and for some reason, the ones I share seem to be the ones that make critters look bigger rather than smaller! Funny how that works.

Yes, Brent, by all means, throw one up that we (I) can guess horribly wrong on!

Tikka, here is a similar 5x5 that I took a couple years back. I scored this thing just for fun and it grossed about 204..net was about 197.

Tikka- I'm guessing around 205

Brent- I'm guessing 285-290

Great bulls guys!!! I love guessing scores just for fun and to me the score doesn't make the hunt at all. I just love looking at elk horns!!!

I found a dead head last year that I havent scored yet, that one would be fun to guess and score. Trying to doctor it up and look good again. The horns were a little bleached and the skull was broken in a few spots.
cohunter14, I would have guessed higher on your bull.
