Sometime sit is not the stupid tourist. Back in the 90's my wife and I would visit Yellowstone every September,usually around the 20th doing photography. My wife has 600 MM lens,so we did not need to get close.. We decided on a picnic along the Gibbon River, east of Norris meadows. No elk were around within 500 yards. While we were eating, elk came in ,but circled back around us about 300 yards, which was between us and the truck. One particular bull was very vocal and turned out to be the most aggressive bull in the park. He came at us at a fast trot, covering the 300 yards in a few minutes,thru brush. I got my wife up a tree, but there were two more photographers above her. No room for me. I took refuge behind the the tree which was about 18" in diameter and the Gibbon River was about 3ft behind me. Essentially I had no place to go. The bull charged me and hit the tree. It's antlers were on both sides of the tree and the tips were on both sides of me. Luckily he wasn't smart enough to work around the tree and kept battering it.

After a few minutes,which seemed like hours, he turned his attention to another tree that had a few people in it. Finally giving up,it wondered back to the cows, but it was an hour or so, before they moved off enough for us to get to the truck.

Later that same afternoon, we watched as the bull went up to the paved road and butted several cars with it's antlers, caving in some doors and fenders.

Sadly that night some poacher shot and killed the same bull and took only the antlers. We were up at the same place at day break the next morning and found the bull.Contacting the park rangers, they interviewed us and we supplied a copy of photographs and videos we had taken of the bull.That eventually helped prosecute the poacher , when he was finally caught two years later.

There is way too much stupid in Yellowstone

Yep.I think there is a box where people check their brains when entering the park.

On evening we were heading back to camp and an older couple was in front of us.We could see a little terrier in the back seating bouncing back and forth. Along the road was a buffalo and sure enough,the dog dived out the window and started chasing the buffalo. Both the people got out of their car and started calling and chasing the dog..

The buffalo spooked and ran off about 20 yards and then turned . It started to chase the dog back.We were screaming at the top of our lungs for them to get back in their car. Instead they went around to the other side of the car.The dog jumped in thru the open door on the buffalo side and the buffalo stopped right at the door. it looked like he as thinking about butting into that open door. It was a tense few minutes, but he gradually backed off. I bet they had to change their shorts.

The stupidest thing though is a crowd of people completely encircling a bull moose ,taking pictures at about 20 feet with their little point and shoot camera. It took a park ranger busting them up so the moose could move out.

We were told though that more people are injured by elk goring them than buffalo and those are usually fatal.

I wish I could find a nice big bull elk that would come towards me rather than run away!
