2012 ElkNut Archery Contest.

Postby 2OArchery » 07 28, 2012 •  [Post 1]

Guys, we are doing a 10 shot contest. Thanks to suggestions from everyone so far, this is what we've come up with.

All shots must be the first shot of the day. You can shoot as much as you want afterwords, but for the purpose of the competion, the first shot of the day is for the contest. Obviously, this will take 10 days.

A standard paper plate, without a dot or anything in particular to aim at.

There is no need to post a picture of every shot. After you make the shot of the day, please write on your paper plate the number of the shot. For example, on the first day, number the shot "1"... on the second day, "2", you get the idea. At the end of the contest, please post a picture of your plate with all the holes marked.

Everyone can come up with a shot. At first, I thought we were going to come up with a 10 shot list and then we would shoot all 10 shots at once and post our groups, that's why I made the list like I did. I like the "1 shot per day" idea more, it more realisticly replicates hunting situations.

Please offer your suggestions for shots. This contest is run by us. This has to be something that everyone can do at home. If you remember a shot you missed because you weren't prepared, feel free to tell us your experience and suggest the shot that would have helped you prepare for that situation. You should try to make these shots uncomfortable. The more you get out of your comfort zone, the more you will learn about yourself.

And last but not least, be honest. This is will help you prepare for archery season. This contest is to help us more than it is to win a prize.

1. 40 yards. After you draw your bow, hold at full draw for 60 seconds. After 45 seconds, hold your breath for the last 15, then fire your shot.
2. 50 yards. Run 100 yards, you can sprint, jog whatever, but don't walk. You really want to get your heart rate up. When you get to your firing position, shoot. This should be a very fast shot. Please push yourself, this is for your own good.
3. 45 yards. Hold your bow at full draw for as long as you can. Hold it until you are forced to letdown. After you letdown, immediately draw and shoot. I like this shot, because it seems that when you draw your bow on an elk, he will stop behind a tree or something, and undoubtedly, as soon as you let down, he will step out into the clear.
4. This if for you guys to come up with.

I got my first shot on mine tonight. I managed to hit the plate but I think it was pure luck as at the end of that minute my pin was moving all over the place. It would have been a no shot on an elk!

ElkNut, if anyone misses, you aren't out. I think we will just go with the best 10 shot group. If no one manages to get all ten on the plate, we'll go to who has the best 9 shot group, so on and so forth.

I want to get in on this, but I can't really shoot every day. At least not at >35 yards. I'll try to do the 10 shots, but it will take more than 10 days.

ElkNut, any particular reason you were asking? :)

The next shot should be kneeling. Maybe 40 yards, hold for 30 seconds before shooting?

We now have the first 4 shots of the contest.
Freebird, we will try to give everyone enough time to finish, within reason.

Postby Jahnke76 » 07 30, 2012 •  [Post 9]

I just finished the second shot. Its not exactly pretty but not as bad as I thought either. The first one almost got me but I lucked out I guess. The second one wasnt that hard considering I have been shooting 20 3d targets on tuesday nights and in preparation for my trip I have been running in between targets and shooting as fast as I can. For another shot how about a long distance shot like you might do for a follow up shot say 70 yards. Or the other idea I would have is 40 yard shot shooting from a sitting position turned back as far as you can shooting almost straight behind you while your legs stay put. Just a couple suggestions.

5. 45 yards. Face directly away from your target. Draw and turn your body (feet remain facing away from the target) and shoot.

6. 70 yards. Whatever makes you comfortable. This is to represent a follow up shot, hopefully not a first shot.

I'm going to need more than 10 days to complete this too....

I broadhead tune and my slick tricks group with my field points out to 50 yards. But past that the BH's drift lower than the FT's. I assume this is due to increased drag on the broadheads that slows those arrows down at long range.

How about a 60 yard shot with a broadhead? This will reveal any tuning issues guys may not be aware of, and it will reveal any sight adjustments that need to be made. Both of these will be beneficial to a hunting situation.

I would be fine with taking more than one shot per day. If you only shoot one arrow at a time, you shouldn't have to wait too long. If you shoot one shot, then your regular practice, then wait a few or more hours.

8. 35 yards. Either before daylight, or after sunset. The darkest you would take a shot while hunting, but still legal.

How about a 20yd simulated frontal shot at a 4" circle in the center of the plate. If it's not inside the circle you deduct 1 shot from the total...kneeling & hold at full draw for 30 sec.

Come to full draw and do a half squat and then shoot. Simulates ducking below a tree limb that is in between you and the elk. Hold that squat for 20 seconds before shooting.

We have all 10 of our shots!! Everyone, try to finish these up as you have time. Remember to number the holes on your plate. Have fun and be safe!!!

I hope the contest hasn't fizzled. I'm assuming that everyone is just busy getting prepared for the coming season. I, too, am still working on mine. I only get to shoot 3 days a week, so I am trying to get it done. Hopefully every one is learing something about themselves and their equipment with this contest.

1. 40 yards. After you draw your bow, hold at full draw for 60 seconds. After 45 seconds, hold your breath for the last 15, then fire your shot.
I almost didnt make it on this one. I started shaking and thought I was going to have to let up. Managed to get it off though.
2. 50 yards. Run 100 yards, you can sprint, jog whatever, but don't walk. You really want to get your heart rate up. When you get to your firing position, shoot. This should be a very fast shot. Please push yourself, this is for your own good.
Luckily I have been shooting 3-d league every tuesday night and have been running between targets so I am used to this.

Managed to hold the bow for just over a minute. Did get off a decent shot though.

4. 40 yards. Kneeling. Hold at full draw for 30 seconds.
I practice from my knees quite a bit so this one wasnt to bad.

5. 45 yards. Face directly away from your target. Draw and turn your body (feet remain facing away from the target) and shoot.
It was pure luck that I put this one in the middle. It was tough for sure.

6. 70 yards. Whatever makes you comfortable. This is to represent a follow up shot, hopefully not a first shot.
I shoot long range every time I practice so this one is not that bad.

7. 60 yards. With your hunting broadhead.
I need to do a little tuning for broadheads yet, but managed to keep it on the plate by holding on the left side of it.

8. 35 yards. Either before daylight, or after sunset. The darkest you would take a shot while hunting, but still legal.
Interesting shot but not as challenging as I though.

9. 20 yards. Kneeling and hold at full draw for 30 seconds. You must hit within a 4 inch circle at the center of the plate. This is to simulate a frontal shot.
My circle is smaller than 4 inches but wasnt happy with it at only 20 yards. I did make the shot though.

10. 25 yards. Come to full draw and do half a squat, stay in the half squat position for 20 seconds, then shoot. To simulate shooting under a limb, brush or other obstruction.
One of the toughest shots for me but got lucky on the shot. I crouched down and as soon as I shot my knee collapsed and I went the rest of the way to the ground. I tried this shot again at a standard clay pigeon and just clipped the edge.

All in all It was a great challenge and it proved to me that my shooting shouldnt be an issue if I manage to get an elk in front of me. I guess all of the 3-d I shoot helps.
