What else do you do besides hunt?

Postby Freebird134 » 07 05, 2012 •  [Post 1]

So besides hunting, shooting, scouting, etc, what else does everyone do for fun?

For me, it's music. You might tell by my screenname! I'm a guitar player. Here's a song I wrote with my previous band. The guitars are me, vocals are my elk hunting partner. Youtube: http://youtu.be/zetwm3jg6G8

I fish and train my dog :)

That's about all I need. Hunting, scouting, shooting rifle and bow, fishing, and training.

Besides work, it's doing things with my wife and two kids; camping, fishing or just hanging out at home.

Work all summer. Elk hunt Aug-Sept. Hunt, trap, and work a little rest of fall. Ice fish and work winter. Fish and work spring. Then do it all over again!

Fly-fish for all kinds of fish, yet to make it to the salt flats.. Also spend as much time as I can with the family and get them involved in whatever I am doing. The Mrs loves to call coyotes with me. That is a hoot. I am going to try and get a yote with my bow this year. We will see as I usually take them with a shotgun when they get that close... :D

I don't have time to do anything besides hunt. Since its almost elk season, we'll start with...
...August: Scout, shoot my bow and prepare for the season and general elk season starts here in Idaho.
September: all elk season and nothing else.
October: general deer season, and this year antelope from Oct 5-24, gen elk for my wife Oct 15-Nov 8, and some bow practice
November: general elk ends and wife's late buck tag from Nov 1-24, possibly whitetail hunt up north, possibly some bow hunting and def bow practice
December: late season archery deer and my waterfowl season is in full swing.
January: waterfowl most of the month, when the season is over, back to shooting my bow.
February: apply for spring bear hunts, more shooting my bow and snow goose season.
March: squirrels, rabbits, coyotes, and shooting my bow.
April: jackrabbits and ground squirrels with my bow, apply for moose and sheep tags, shoot my bow
May: spring bear and carp hunting time, any time spare time there are plenty of jackrabbits around, apply for controlled hunts, shoot my bow
June: some more carp and rock chucks are out, find out what tags we drew, begin making plans for scouting trips, shoot my bow
July: scout for most controlled hunts that I might draw, shoot my bow... Rinse and repeat...

The only time I'm not hunting is when I'm researching or preparing for the next one. I don't have time to do anything else. And, my buddy and I have now started going to 3D shoots, so that is pretty much every spare minute I have.

Enjoyed the music guys. I used to be in a small band years ago myself. But after injuring my arm and loosing feeling in two fingers, I couldn't feel the strings anymore. But I still enjoy listening to good pickers. My brother in law is really good. Wish I could figure out how to put some of his sound tracks on here for you to hear.

Yes! Great original tune. Man, how do you find time to teach "and" hunt? I know my brother played in his band for years and really, just worked off and on when the gigs slowed down to pay the rent :).. Sounds very good freebird. RJ

Besides thinking about elk hunting and driving my wife crazy with my bugling practice and my on-line elk talk, I also fish quite a bit, mostly in the salt in WA (Puget Sound). I enjoy golfing also but don't do it much anymore outside of organizing an annual regimental golf scramble. Here's my ugly mug with a salty Puget Sound king.. This guy had to go back as he was a native (can only keep hatchery kings most of the year).

If im not shooting something or other I want to be fishing. The problem is when you hunt everything there is to be hunted in wisconsin and shoot 3-d, there isnt much time for anything else. I used to race quads but gave that up the day I learned I wasnt indestructible.

Nothing near as exciting as some of you fellas above. I run a small hobby farm that I grew up on in Michigan. I own 20 to 30 cows and sell their calves every fall. I put up 100 acres of hay and a few small plots of corn and beans for the deer.

That bike is on my "someday" list. Wifee doesn't like riding on my 690, and I can't say that I blame her. That seat is awful once I start hitting the ruts and rocks.

It's all hunting or something related to it. Trying to expand my horizons into the fishing world. I enjoy fishing, but it doesn't drive me like anything hunting does. Also hoping to get into trapping this year for the first time. New roommate does it a quite a bit and I think that may a new hook to keep me outside in the off-season (while also aiding in my scouting...). 27 year old bachelor, so no honey do's for me.

Careful, trapping is as addicting as elk hunting. And yes, you see a whole different side of animals. Plus you become more aware of the little signs in the woods.

Professionally: I was teaching High school construction. Next fall I will be teaching engineering at an alternate High school
Family stuff with my mostly adult daughters, they enjoy hunting with me.
The oldest daughter, we did a lot of bodyt work on a 95 Camoro, Just finished her 98 Honda
The middle daughter I help her train her horses
The youngest likes to hunt, bears, this year she put in and drew a bull moose tag.
ATVing; my wife likes to ride along
Hiking/ scouting
I wish I fished more
I’m a BSA Scoutmaster.
Other church callings
I enjoy home construction projects, taking care of the yard and garden, put up some of the fruit from the orchard.
Every year set a few traps. I might do a bit more next winter, trap a few muskrats for kicks,.. or cats and coyotes, depends on gas prices
Avid goose hunter,.. maybe I’m a bit nuts at it.
I don’t reload rifle and shotgun loads much, but I do like the challenge of a really good load
A bit of woodworking, just finished two 7-drawer bedroom drawers
Watching wildlife, maybe someday a bit of camera work

The last 15 years I have been working on my hobby farm. Digging ponds, planting native forbs and grasses, food plots, apple orchards etc. Basically turned this place into the perfect whitetail utopian paradise. The last three years I spent cutting huge white pine off the property, peeling them, then crafting them into my dream house. Blood, sweat, and tears by the gallon.

I fly fish a lot over the winter months. I live just a short drive from one of the best tail waters in Colorado, so it's hard not to fish all winter. In the summer I'm on the boat chasing bass. In between I'm running around with the kids, hunting birds, training my two pointers, and finding some way to fit work into the equation. I also throw down some tunes occasionally, playing bass in a monthly jam session - good way to relax and blow off a little steam.

You been holding out on me Bullnuts. I didn't know you liked music. I used to play bass as well. But mine was the old doghouse bass fiddle. Had many good times slapping that thing.

Also, you guys might want to know that Bullnuts used to write an outdoor colum for the Pueblo, Colorado newspaper. Besides that he is a heck of a nice fellow and a good friend.

Thanks Bill. Yes, I've been known to rock out on occasion, and the old group and I will be getting together in late September to play a small music festival in Monument. We'll likely sound pretty bad, but it'll be fun to get the guys together again.
I'm also still writing for the Pueblo West View newspaper and doing their outdoors column twice per month. It's still fun after 10 years!

All year long, once a week, we help run a board and card gaming group.

And, not as much as I used to due to us being in an apartment and me not having my workshop set up, design and build RC Aircraft.

What kind of card game is that Vanish? Doesn't look like normal cards.

That one is called "Bohnanza" - a German strategy card game with a bean trading theme. Perhaps its oddest feature is that you cannot rearrange your hand, as you need to play the cards in the order that you draw them. The cards are colorful depictions of beans in various descriptive poses, and the object is to make coins by planting fields (sets) of these beans and then harvesting them. To help players match their cards up, the game features extensive trading and deal making.

Our game collection is right about 250 right now, though most of them were not acquired new.
