Old Reliable

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 08 17, 2013 •  [Post 1]

What is your oldest, longest owned, piece of hunting gear that is "still" in your packing list for elk hunting this fall? As we move through our hunting career, we change gear out for various reasons and the old Shrade, Uncle Henry folding blade that has dressed out elk, deer, bear, as well as fleshed out beaver, gets put somewhere on the shelf for a newer, lighter, sharper elk knife. What is that one piece of gear that is still in your gear list that has stood the test of time and continues to go with you each year?

Had to think pretty hard on that one RJ. It's gotta be an old meat saw my father passed down to me several years ago. If I can use that old saw half as much as he did in his lifetime, I will be a happy hunter. I have a smaller, lighter compact saw, but it just doesn't get the use as that old saw. Wish it could talk as the stories would be awesome.

I don't have any. I sold my hunting ground in mo when we moved out here. there were a ton of memories there. im sad my kids wont have that but nothing I could do to change it. since im new to elk hunting I have started from scratch, but I cant wait to pass stuff down to my kids, and grandkids hopefully someday.

The thing that come to my mind is my old Western Boulder hunting knife. My dad and mom got it for me on my 12th or 13th birthday. The knife is still in great shape and I hope to pass it along to a grand kid soon.

My felt hunting hat, been with me since 1975. My partner hates it, but when I put it on, magic happens, and something usually gets a tag put on it. I call it my lucky hat.

This knife never goes anywhere without me...
Its only about 10 years old but has taken apart dozens of elk and deer.

My 11 year old bow, which will probably see another 20 seasons with me, and my Gerber T handle bone saw, which will zip through a pelvic bone line a hot knife through butter.

I still have my original Wyoming saw too but don't carry a saw these days.

In archery I'd have to say my Winn's Free Flight release. If that thing could talk!

In rifle that would have to be my Pendleton wool parka and my Stormy Kromer. Like old friends, just the sight of them makes me warmer. ;)
