I think my single biggest pet peeve is people calling pronghorn an "antelope." But even fish & game can't get it right :P

They are my favorite animal :)

GOOD LUCK TOMORROW (I'm jealous!)

headin out in about an hour, would love to go now but his patience will give out. thanks, if I can figure out how to put pics on here I will try. my computer has a sd card slot so I should be able to figure it out.
brad, if I see a rattler it will be the shortest trip ever, im scared to death, literally, of a garnder snake. I freakin hate snakes. im gonna bang around the grass, blind, inside, etc before I get comfortable. God forbid one crawls up during the day and I don't know it. bad things will happen. but I guarantee I will probe the blind like its got an ied in it.

Scott you just made my day!

All my family and friends tease me because I used to get all worked up about using the correct name. I guess that's the problem with common names. The scientific name actually reflects the misnomer too: Antilocapra americana. I think whoever first named it recognized it looked kinda like old-world antelope and goats (antilo = antelope, capra = male goat). They are my favorite animal. I gave a guest lecture last spring in an ecology class and they began every day's lecture with an "animal of the day." So I did pronghorn and structured it with my top 7 reasons pronghorn are my favorite animal (it would have been top 10, but I left off "fun to hunt" and "tasty").

1. Cute. Look at a baby pronghorn. It's the cutest thing ever.
2. Among the largest eye-to-body ratio of any animal; great vision
3. Only animal with forked horns and shed them annually
4. A mating system that is more like prairie chickens than anything else (lek)
5. Endemic to North america: The only Family of mammals found entirely in N.A.
6. Only member of their family; closest relative might be Giraffe!
7. No predators. They evolved in a time of megapredators (saber tooth cat, dire wolves, short faced bear) and once they reach adulthood nothing alive today is a real threat to them.....well, except Scott's son!!!! :)

Sorry to hijack! Keep us posted on the hunt!!!!!

Man! I'm way behind the times! I just set my blind out today. And for some reason I forgot all about the trail cam I own. So I set it up as well. Guess I've been thinking elk for so long that the goat (oops! sorry) pronghorn season kinda snuck up on me. Think I'll probably let the blind sit for a few days and see what the camera has to show. There is really not much activity at the water I'm hunting but it is all I have for now.

we saw 7 does/fawns and 1 buck. buck only came within 50 yds, not anywhere close enough for my son. we had a good time though. he did really well sitting there for so long, it was hot. im proud of him. I think all the rain we have got over the last couple weeks killed us, there was standing water everywhere, no reason for the pronghorns to come to our hole. we are goin back either tom or sat.

That sounds like a great trip. I hunted pronghorn with a bow for years (spot and stalk...ugh) before I killed one. I bet his heart was racing when they were at 50 yards! Hopefully it got him pumped enough to put in the time during the next year to extend his effective range. And hopefully one gets closer Saturday!!

Very cool Scott! Nothing like having your son hunt with you. Can't wait for my son to get old enough to hunt with me.

I went pronghorn hunting yesterday too. It was amazing.

If you ever want to try some sick public land spot and stalk hunting for antelope, let me know. It would be fun to have a partner to hunt with.

This is what I experienced and learned:

I'll be heading out again next week. I have a feeling it may get some pressure on the weekend ;)

Cool Scott! Not Monday as we have our elk calling meet up at the range at 6.

But maybe Tuesday - Friday. Like to be out during the week to reduce seeing other hunters.

I'll keep an eye on the weather too.

I'll have my decoy by then so we can double team em.

Thanks Scott.

I know I cant thurs or Friday. so that leaves us tues or wedn this week. if I have advance warning I can make one of them work. sounds fun. I have a week away from elk hunting in the middle of September, hopin to do some spot and stalk then when they are rutting. I hear its fun.

Perfect. Lets plan on Tuesday and watch the weather.

See you Monday night at the range.

This should be good Scott.
