CO CPW Women and Youth Mentor Programs

Postby mtnmutt » 07 20, 2013 •  [Post 1]

If you know a woman or youth (10-17) that does not have a hunting mentor, please encourage them to sign up for this program.

This Hunter Outreach Program deadline is August 1st, but their other "programs" are year round and held throughout the state.

In addition, Women Afield programs vary in what they cover but most have hands on training for: fishing (fly and spin), shotgun, rifle, archery. Cost are around $15-20 and includes lunch. Equipment is provided. They do not have to participate in all the activities. If they only want to learn to fish, they can just learn to fish.

I have never attended one, but if my schedule ever permits me too, I will.

They have other whole family weekend programs throughout the year. Great way to get the entire family involved. Sign up for DOW Insider emails to receive emails about future events. You can also see press releases on poaching when you signup for these emails.

Please encourage youth and women to at least try these activities.

Sounds like some great programs! Glad you posted for the CO folks!

I'm always impressed when a state dnr/f&G puts out the effort to recruit new sportsmen. Wisconsin has good programs too! My wife and 2 other women-friends of ours got loaner bows from the DNR to help them get into archery; I know another woman that killed her first deer and turkey via DNR learn to hunt programs; and one of my students just got selected for a learn to bear hunt program in mid-august. he's never hunted before, and is headed out after black bear! I'm so excited for him!

bnsafe, You do a great job teaching your kids to fish and hunt. I hope your son gets that hunt.

freebird123, Good to see other states doing the same. I wish all states would.

It is good to reinvest hunting license dollars into future potential hunters. I am all for encouraging everyone to get outdoors to enjoy what our lands and waterways have to offer.

Thanks for the post. I was hoping they offered something in other states. For years I have thought that they need to have a program for hunters like the Big Brothers organization. I have no kids but would love to mentor a youth or two, male or female, to hunt. Nothing like that in Pa that I know of.
