I used tapatalk on my nexus tablet today and did not get this. My tablet has regular tapatalk version 2.4.13

Perhaps your phone did not update to a current version or it did update and now the elknut forum is out of date and not compatible with your version. Try updating your tapatalk to the latest version. You may have auto updates turned off.

API is Application Programming Interface. I won't bore you with the details on this.

The message implies that JohnF (elknut admin) may need to update the site's tapatalk interface. I am not familiar with tapatalk updates and how the server side (elknut forum) has to stay updated for the client side (your phone) to work. Message implies that elknut forum side may need to be updated to latest, so your version can talk to it.

Bottom line: either server side or client side is out of date and can no longer interface with each other.
