I have not tried it myself but have several friends that have. I am using p90X right now along with HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) elliptical running and biking.
Most of them that try it say its based off of HIIT training and just using different techniques for an aerobic work out. Jump training is what two of them said. Others that have tried it will be able to describe it better than me.

Did all but the last week of Insanity last summer ... I use them as supplemental workouts now ... but not as a primary. It's not fun. Basically Jump/plyo/core training to failure, take a short break, then repeat. "Failure".

Very good for CV conditioning, but a little too intense for this 45 year-old. P90x here.

I have not tried the Insanity

I have tried and continue to rotate in P90x, TrainToHunt, and something I made up for working out.
