Back when I was much younger, we used to do alot of coon hunting back in the midwest. Chasing a pack of hounds at night was a great sport. No one had a compass back then so we learned to navigate by the stars. The Big Dipper and the North Star were the big ones. But often we would be down in a wooded hollow and couldn't see it. So, we looked for other constellations to guide us. For instance, did you know that on what we called Orin's Belt, the sword tip always pointed in the general direction of south. And there was another one we called the Seven Sisters. It looked like a little bitty dipper and the tip of the handle always pointed in the general direction of east. Both of these constellations drifted across the sky from east to west depending on the time of the year so you had to look for them. But their tails always pointed in those directions no matter where they were in the night time sky. They helped me to walk out on many of a dark night.

When I lived on the desert, it was interesting to observe the orientation of the stars. There was no particular point to it, but I could tell the time of year and how close to hunting season it was getting, by just looking up. The North Star was always the main point of reference.

One_elk, I just posted on the Elk Forum that my sense of humor is sometimes "weird". It is nice to see that I have company in that department. :D

Almost forgot that we always called the constellation Orin, the Kite. Guess we weren't very good astronomers. But if you could find the North Star, the Kite, and the Seven Sisters, you could find your way out of just about anywhere.
