Top 5 Outdoor Movies

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 03 01, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Wow.. it is the off season and I'm feeling the pain. Just sent Freebird a title of one of my old favorite movies (not an outdoor movie though.. ;) ..). I've gotta say, I like J. Johnson, The Mountain Men, The Edge, Man in the Wilderness, and The Hunted to name a few. You guys?

Phantom, I'll have to check out that Tom Selleck flick :)

Best outdoor movie: Deliverance. It's like Smokey and the Bandit with arrows.

I remember My Side of the Mountain! Great movie with the boy, his racoon, and the peregrine falcon (the kid hollowed out an old stump to live in for the winter). I remember him going into the local town in his buckskin and the kids made fun of him. A classic for sure. Thanks for bringing that old one up.

Top 5... I don't know if I can limit it to 5 but we'll see...

Jeremiah Johnson
Where the Red Fern Grows
The Ghost and the Darkness
Lonesome Dove, I know its a western, but its my all time favorite movie. (I'm watching it right now, as a matter of fact)

I had about 10 in my head when I started typing, but now I'm drawing a blank...

I can't believe that no one has mentioned Escanaba in da Moonlight, its a classic.

Jeremiah Johnson
Dances With Wolves
Last of The Mohicans
Lonesome Dove
and any western with Selleck and Elliot

Liked A River Runs Through It but the yuppies took up fly fishing and danged near ruined the sport. Just hope Brad P doesn't make a movie about elk hunting. Of course, there could be an upside if hunting suddenly became chic.

Anyone see "The Hunter" staring Willem Dafoe? It's a little slow, but I kind of enjoyed it.

I watched "Lincoln" about a month ago. That was the first movie I went to in many years and I rarely watch one on TV. It was excellent. Does "Lincoln" count?

I think we can count it this time, Swede, but only because of your advanced age. ;)

Thanks Sniper. I also accept all of the senior citizen discounts that are offered, so it was good to see my nomination for an outdoor movie accepted. :) Like me, Lincoln would probably have done better by getting out more. He was a good man. It is too bad that he had to resort to being a lawyer and politician to make a living. Just think how proud his family would have been if he had been a hunter and made something of himself.
I know I don't get out much either. It rains all of the time around here is my excuse. I would continue on with this post, but I need to grab my rain gear and start on my morning walk. :D

When I was a kid, there was a TV movie about some guys that got lost in the Everglades and the Seminoles were after them. It was titled Shark River. Sniper with Tom Barenger is another favorite. I especially liked how that woodland camo he wore blended in.

Haven't seen Shark River (will check it out if I can find it on Netflix). It reminds me of another swamp movie called Southern Comfort with Keith Carradine and Powers Booth. It's about a bunch of Nation Guard Soldiers that go on an exercise in the swamp and decide to steal a couple of old boats from some cajuns. Bad choice. Once they see the cajuns are watching them from the bank, they shoot blanks out of their M16s at them.. Bad move #2 as the cajuns start killing them off.. Good movie :)

Top 5 Outdoor Movies

If you haven't seen "touching the void", I'd really recommend it. True story about two mountaineers.

And while its a fly fishing movie, I'd really recommend "a backyard in nowhere", its about some Danish guys that head to Alaska on a pike fly fishing trip. I'll post a trailer to it when I get to a computer.

Good movie. Logically, a little far fetched but still a good flick. Being part Cherokee, part Apache, and part European I always end up a bit conflicted after watching "white man vs Indian" type movies.

The wife was doing some spring cleaning and came across an old video tape called Wind Walker. Great indian show and not a word spoken in it. Had alot to do with the Souix and Crow. I think it was made around 1980.

Any remember this movie from 1971?

Image

A poor old mountain man returns to the wild Oregon countryside to find a grizzly bear he named Toklat. He recalls his old days with the bear, from rescuing him as a cub to teaching him how to hunt. He finally finds Toklat and faces the true reason he is after him: the bear is wanted for killing a rancher's livestock, and the mountain man badly needs the bounty money.

How about Rambo, the first one. I read "My Side of the Mountain" and "Kavik the Wolfdog" many times growing up. Only watched the movies once or twice.

I like the "Outlaw Jose Wales". Not really an outdoor movie, but it takes place in two very different places in the good old USA. I love it when they ride into the son's old ranch place.

Loved Jeremiah Johnson, seen it about 50 times , but in entirety only twice. Channel surfing and that is where it stays. It's #1.

When I was a kid, we were always pumped up for "The Night of the grizzly" with Clint Walker. Had some humor in it, and some great suspense.

Man called Horse, Man in the Wilderness, Lonesome Dove for the adventurous spirit. There was a recent series called "Into the West" that was pretty good.

One current theme to most of these great movies, they're all 20+ years old.
