Taxidermy Care

Postby MTLongdraw » 01 13, 2013 •  [Post 1]

When I got my mount the other day the guy shared some info with me. He said to use Liquid Gold on your horns to keep them from drying out. Its a wood care product. He put some on my bull and it tooks really good. It doesn't give it that glossy look either. I picked some up at Lowe's tonight, I think you can find it at any hardware store. He said do it about every year or so. Good on all mounts EXCEPT SHEEP...DO NOT USE ON SHEEP! I know a lot of you are taxidermist and probably have other tricks but just wanted to pass this along.

MT, Thanks for the tip, I bet that stuff really brings out the color of the rack also. I use armor all on my elk racks, but it doesn't seem to last to long.I'll give liquid gold a try. Thanks.

I use a mix 50/50 linseed oil and turpentine Great on horns and antlers. Also brings pronghorn horns back to life.

Isn't this the mix that can spontaneously catch fire if left on a rag? Can't remember.
