Now that's a great read!

Postby wawhitey » 02 15, 2023 •  [Post 1]

I could root through my books and find a lot to recommend, which ill likely do later, over time. Right now i figured this should be a thread like the music thread. With all you old timers on here i cant be the only guy that still reads books
I read a bit of everything, but especially enjoy non fiction and / or historical fiction revolving around americas early days.
This is a good one i just started reading tonight, and im about 80 pages in is all. "A Majority of Scoundrels" those early fur trappers heading into the wilderness into hostile indian territory, risking starvation, exposure, grizzlies, losing their scalps etc, man they were some tough hombres. Hard to imagine.
I need to get to sleep so i can wake up early enough to spend the morning hunting, but im going to give it one more chapter or so before i kill the lights.
Not done with this book yet by a long shot, but already i highly recommend it.
Im always looking for recommendations on good books, hence my starting this thread. So what have ya got that you think others here should check out when theyre not busy in the mountains chasing elk or other game?

Okay. You opened the ball. Here is the beginning of my list. I will try here at first to add titles that I think should be read but are mostly forgotten.

Count of Monte Cristo
Ben Hur
Collected short stories of Jack London
Wahb, biography of a grizzly
The Unforgiven, by Alan Le May (sooo much deeper than the movies, so much more real. You understand real fear reading about the kiowa indians
Winter Range, same
The Searchers, same
Two Years Before the Mast. real account of rounding the horn in a square masted ship
A River Runs Through It. The author was the real deal. Grew up in Montana fist fighting, fishing, fighting forest fires and that other f word. Oh, and drinking.
The Road, Cormac McCarthy. No zombies or walking dead. Just the real thing and its worse.

White Feather, for you sniper fans. The guy had a big brass set for sure.

This one, the way i see it, is a must have for any bear hunter, or just anybody interested in bears. There is a ton of information condensed into this book. Its a book on bear biology, not a "how to hunt bears" book, but if you read it and absorb what youre reading it will certainly be exremely helpful in the "how to" regard.

Excellent! Not sure when, next year or two I want to go after a mature boar with my bow Elkmaster. The Colorado bear biologists are super helpful. I don't need to see a lot of bears. Just the one.

Unless youre real lucky, youre going to have to see a lot of sows and booboos before you see yogi. Just like elk or deer or anything else, mature male bears are significantly outnumbered by the juvenile and female population

I read through the Bible every year. I can only guess at the number of times I have read through it but estimate 30. It never grows old, and it is not only a great read, but also life changing.

A couple more bear related books, but with a bit more of the entertainment / historical aspect, rather than biology and behavior as in the previous book i posted.
The book on the left is a biography about bill hulet, written by an ancestor. Bill was the oriinal professional bear hunter hired by the western washington timber companies in the early 1900s and has probably killed more black bears than anybody, and was a hell of an interesting character. He was the one that proved to the state that bears were eating trees. Before him, it was co sidered absurd. When he got older and his work got more and more demanding, he said he needed a couple more hunters. Enter ralph flowers, author of his autobiography, the book on the right. Mr flowers not only managed to make such a good show for himself that bill hulet gave him his territory upon retirement, but hes the guy that developed the bear feeding program in use today to provide bears in the tree farms with the nutrition they need to prevent excess tree peelings until spring greenup. He killed a ton of bears, but made up for it by coming up with a way to save a ton of bears. Both very entertaining reads about tough woodsmen who were able to make a living and live great lives in a way that the modern world wont accomodate. Kinda wish i was there.
The next few books i post will be unrelated to bears, i promise.

I also just ordered a river runs through it. Based on your short description it sounds appealing. I just have some vague memories of that being a movie with brad pitt. But i wont let that turn me away from the book. Fight club was hands down the best movie of my generation. And one of the very few instances where the movie was better than the book. So im gonna give it a try.
