Another old witness hits the dirt

Postby Jhg » 01 13, 2023 •  [Post 1]

Emerald ash borer, an invasive pest from Asia whose larva preys on ash trees is killing many old ash trees that have stood proud despite fierce storms and crowned over many moments of town history that occurred under their lofty branches.
My tree company has a "We Give Back" program that offers free or heavily discounted tree work to non-profits, like women's shelters, children's safe houses and historic sites. This years recipient is the Hover Farm, a historically important example of Colorado's agricultural heritage in an area under development pressure that too often erases that history.

Here is a fallen black ash tree, once a proud sentinel that spent well over 100 years on the Hover Farm heritage site. The ash borer attacked this tree and killed it.
Logs will be milled into lumber and live on as table tops, furniture and other useful things. We may auction the large log as a fundraiser, but generally we do not look for any gain from a log. It is enough the wood goes to people who will use it to build furniture.

Interesting Jhg. It is unfortunate that the Emerald Ash borer is not the only invader came to destroy great native species. The Chestnut and five needle pines come to mind. I think the White pine will survive due to the efforts made to produce Blister rust resistant trees.

This is why I always take suitable logs to the sawyer. This is crotch figure from the tree shown in my first post. Black ash has a wonderful light chocolate/amber color.

I''d love to have the center section out of a log like that! What a beautiful grain. That would make some great knife handles. ;)
