Weather...Oh NO!

Postby Tigger » 12 21, 2022 •  [Post 1]

Let's start a weather thread. Everyone like sharing weather stories. When weather is bad in your neck of the woods, post it here and we can all either make fun of you or commiserate with you.

I will go first. This week it will not get above 0 until Sunday afternoon. Lows will be close to -20, but the wind! Oh the wind! Supposed to be 40-50 mph tomorrow and Friday. And if that isn't bad enough, we are supposed to get 6-10 inches of fluffy snow today.

So to recap, lots of snow, horrendous wind and below zero temps for the next 3-4 days.

It is probably enough for me to say I live at an elevation under 300 feet on the west side of Oregon. This area is cool and wet during much of the winter, but right now it is cool and sunny. It is supposed to snow a little this week, but I am not chaining up anything yet for Blizzard's blizzard.

today is "bread and milk" day for us Texans.

not that we live on bread and milk.....

we just go to the store and act like it's the end of civilization if we cant empty the shelves of those products. I'm serious. my wife is participating now.

like most of the middle of the country, it'll be cold the next 3 days (hits tomorrow about 9am).

when it really gets bad is if we have about an inch of ice on the roads. thats when we Texans decide to go out and play bumper cars with one another. smart folk stay home and just work on a garage project. I'll be cleaning the carb on the 4 wheeler. :)

It snowed about 6" two days ago here. That's rare enough for sea level in Puget Sound in Western Washington, but today the temp didn't get above 22 and tonight it will get down to 10 degrees. I can only remember one or two times in 38 years it's been this cold here. Tomorrow night more snow then warming up to normal high 40's and an inch of rain on Saturday. Going to be a slushy mess here on Christmas.

It is nasty cold here. -19 on my thermometer. The wind is supposed to howl at 20 to 30 mph today. Windchills in the -40s. High of -9. At least it should be making good ice on the lake!

Officially got single digits at my house this morning for the first time I can remember. Lived within a mile of here basically my whole life. Got to 9 degrees. No wind though, not all that uncomfortable. Tomorrow expecting an ice storm as we transition out of this cold period into rain again. Have to drive 40 miles for a doctors appointment. Not going to be fun.

22 below zero this morning. Forecast shows a high of 3° this afternoon. Buried in snow. Pretty rough winter here. And after christmas its supposed to get up into the upper 30s and be some rain for a few days. Then of course itll freeze again. So we will have deep snow with a firm crust that the deer will posthole through, while the coyotes can sprint across the top. This is not good.

The brand is acurite. Juat did a quick look on amazon and didnt see the exact one i have (probably a discontinued model) but see a lot from the same brand that are very similar. No complaints here. Works great, and the little sensor thing hanging in a tree is like 30 yards from my house and works great, and ive had it up maybe 5 years and only changed the batteries in it once. Id buy it again, no question.

We got up to -14 yesterday afternoon I believe. Man, that wind is merciless though. My boys went out snowmobiling...for about 15 minutes and they hightailed it back to hot chocolate and the fireplace. However, this morning it is up to -11 already. Wind is howling. Might get a few more degrees too. Only about 2+ days until we crack no degrees (0). The dog wants to go outside until you open the door, then not so much.

It warmed up for today and maybe for this coming week.
When I got to the field before sunrise there were already 300 geese on the field.
17 degrees' when I was setting goose decoys his morning,
But what great weather to hunt in. Kind of a weird foggy thing going on. At ground level visibility was about 2 and sometimes 4 miles.
We had low cloud cover. Geese flying low at 50 yards above the ground and couldn't be seen until they were 300-500 yards out. Geese a bit higher would just pop out of the cloud 150 yards out.

The weatherman was wrong. NNE winds. the worst possible for the predicted wind direction.
Still a good s=goose hunt.

We're back to normal Western Washington weather. Rain and wind. Wind and rain. For the foreseeable future.

In just 4 days we went from 22 below zero, to pouring rain and 37 degrees. The woods are an absolute mess now, with all this rain pouring down on thigh deep snow. Roads are also very bad.

It is warm and wet here now and the wind has been blowing hard. I have a lot of Douglas-fir limbs on the porch, roof and in my yard now.

Your storm is moving NE towards me right now. Attached image of winds forecasted for 4pm - 10pm tonight. I'm located right in the blue star. I'm at about 300' elevation with a direct view of the water so we our winds are usually at or exceeding the forecasted maximums.

It appears you will get the same level of wind we just had. Hunker down. Best wishes.

I grew up in northern Maine. We had a 3/4 mile driveway we plowed ourselves. I remember getting the truck stuck 3 AM in a drift, wind howling, snow hitting the face like bb's. It was 15* below zero. We heated with wood from our 200+ acres of woodlot. My Dad took me ice fishing, all weathers. The ice was routinely 5 feet thick.

I find it impossible to comment on the current weather. It is what it is.

Jhg: there was a country song years ago ("Tombstone Every Mile") about a truck route in upper Maine where many truckers lost their lives. If I remember right, it was winter driving that was so dangerous for them. Do you know of such a highway?
